Detox is a subject close to my heart as it has many benefits – improving the digestive process, increase stamina, energizing the body and much more. Detox program is not about fasting or starvation. For me detox brings up images of health, vitality and looking good – which are the reasons why so many of us try to carry it out.
In this article I would like to share with you the 6 essentials of a successful detox program. Although you don’t need to do drastic changes to your lifestyle, you still need to adopt long term changes to live a healthier life.
1. Consume Healthy Foods
The food you eat during a detox should support the systems that participate in this process (liver, kidneys, skin, lymphatic system, intestine and lungs). It is best to eat organic produce that is fresh and in season, while avoiding preservatives and artificial additives. You can also refer to my previous articles about the best foods to cleanse your liver, kidneys, colon and lungs.
2. Drink Clean Water
Water is vital to life, and it’s best to drink filtered tap water or glass bottled water from organic sources. It is recommended to drink at least 8 glasses of water each day, but if you struggle to drink plain water, you can try these ideas for flavored water.
3. Deep Breathing
When we breath, we usually use only the upper parts of our lungs (shallow breathing), but if we also use the lower parts of the lungs, we enable oxygen to circulate properly to our tissues. It brings with it nutrients and removes the waste away. Deep breathing also stimulates the lymphatic system which helps the body get rid of toxins and brings a sense of relaxation.
If your abdomen moves, then you deep breathing, but if only the area below your rib cage is moving, then you are shallow breathing. Try to adopt deep breathing in normal life and try to change your breathing habits for the better.
4. Exercise Gently
We all know that exercise is vital for our health and well-being, but when you do detox program, it is important that you don’t stress your body by exercising too hard. This will take the energy away from the detox process and you will feel weak and tired.
Instead, during a detox program do a more gentle and relaxing exercises, such as walking or especially yoga. These will encourage deep breathing and will boost your circulation. After exercising make sure you stretch, as it releases the toxins that have been built up in the muscles during exercising. Massage increases the circulation and improves oxygen flow in our body. It helps the lymphatic system to remove toxins from the tissues, as well as removing dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. You can find here more natural ways to cleanse your lymphatic system.
6. Improve Mental Energy
During times of stress, some people notice they have more skin problems. This is mainly because the body uses the energy required for detox to deal instead with stress. Other negative emotions such as fear, self pity and mood swings have the same effect.
It is recommended that during detox process you will try to improve your mental energy by doing for example meditation and deep breathing, or bath ritual which can help you relax and sleep well at the end of the day.
