However drinking cold lemon water is good after exercise or if you have a fever and you want to cool your body down.

In any case, if you want to use lemon water for better digestion and detoxifying your body and you don’t like warm water, you can also drink it in a room temperature.

Side Effects of Lemon Water

Lemons are tangy citrus fruits that are packed with goodness. There are usually no adverse effects of drinking warm lemon water or cold lemon water. Doctors on WebMD say that lemons are generally safe to consume even in higher medical amounts. (30)

However, there are a few things to be aware of:

  • Lemons contain a high amount of citric acid which could affect tooth enamel. Drinking through a straw or rinsing your mouth with water afterward can prevent any damage to your teeth.
  • Although lemon water can help prevent acid reflux, it seems to cause symptoms of heartburn in some people.
  • Lemon water isn’t a diuretic, but drinking more fluid throughout the day will make you use the bathroom more.

      I got pneumonia a few years back and did nothing but drink lemon water and husband beat on my back and we over naturally in two weeks. Had just moved up to upstate New York and didn’t have a dr and that is what I did. No drugs.got pneumonia again but it we mild and went away quicker. I believe because my body fought it naturally. I am going to start drinking lemon water and honey again. I get sick too much because had breast cancer and chemo radiation. Cancer free for over 7 years but has compromised my immune system.

        When consumed internally it’s easier to consume lemon water, as pure lemon juice is just too sour to drink, and you enjoy the benefits of drinking water which is important by itself.

            Fresh lemon is the best because it retains the nutrients which are time sensitive. Bottled lemon juice may have additives that have very little to do with lemons (like citric acid, sugar and water). The amount which is usually used is the juice of half a fresh lemon in 12 to 16 ounces of water.

    Jenny, I asked about getting your info in book form and you got back to me very quickly, thank you. Since the lemon water was just published on FB I thought I would ask this question now. I know the benefits of the lemon and want to know if Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar does the same things and works the same way. Can one use either of them interchangeable and get the same results. If not what are the differences? I use a lot of ACV and it is suppose to help with artheritis. Does it do all of the other things that lemons do.

      It might be that you put too much lemon in the water, so either reduce a bit the amount or lemon, or add honey to sooth your throat or don’t use it a day after day, but rather 3-4 times a week.

      If you have acid reflux or GERD lemon can make it worse. The symptoms you describe sound like it. The acid comes up at night when you lie flat in bed and irritates your throat, also causing the cough.

    When you have to qualify all you propositions with “it may” you know there isn’t any scientific evidence to support your assertions. I can say all of the above about chewing fat cubes too, and be just as correct.

      Hi Joe, in the field of natural health the scientific evidence is often not enough to use the words “it will”. Many studies are not conclusive or not big enough or further research is needed. Although there has not been a large amount of scientific work in the form of clinical trials to authenticate certain claims, I believe this is due to the fact that we are talking about natural substances and therefore can’t be patented by the large Pharma corporations. This is one of the main reason the world of western medicine dismisses alternative treatments as ‘complementary medicine’ at best. If you want to chew fat cubes and believe it’s going to help you – you are most welcome to do it!

      Hi Theresa, many people can’t eat lemons like oranges because they are too sour, hence it’s is diluted in water. But if you like them as is, you don’t have to add water. Just bear in mind one thing – I have read that the acids in fresh lemons can damage your teeth because they cause the enamel on the surface to wear away, leaving the teeth more susceptible to cavities and decay. I’ve read that sucking on fresh lemons or drinking undiluted lemon juice is the most damaging because the acids stick to your teeth. It is recommended that if you add lemon juice to water or tea, drink the beverage through a straw to keep as much of the acid off your teeth as possible, and limit your intake of whole lemon segments as well.

        I’m a natural healer, trained in a variety of therapies. Having heartburn, or acid reflux is generally caused by undigested food sitting in the stomach. The rotting food produces its own acid, which is what you’re experiencing. You need more DIGESTIVE enzymes to digest your food thoroughly. Another cause is hiatal hernia, which is easily treated. Lemon water is wonderful! But, anything to the extreme can hurt us. NEVER drink iced or cold drinks! It shuts down digestion completely!

      Some people recommend taking it on an empty stomach, which means about 20-30 min. before consuming breakfast. Then after breakfast you can brush your teeth as usual.

    Grateful for your informative article … lemon tree loaded and needed to know how to put them to good use. Found you just in time to do just that. Hope to find others to share my harvest with … tree is laden with large lemons … Meyer lemons are cross between lemon and mandarin orange … hope they’re acceptable. Presently they’re bright yellow but turn orange if left on the tree. Going to order your 70 helpful ideas for my IPad. PS … my grandmother used to have hot water and lemon everyday, she had beautiful skin. This goes back to the 40’s. Memories of one of my favorite people, bedridden and never complained.       Hi Ruth, since I’m not a doctor, I believe that a person with a special medical condition should talk to his/her doctor to be on the safe side of things. Some websites list lemon water as an aid to relief menstrual cramps. They claim that drinking water keeps your body from retaining water and helps to avoid painful bloating during menstruation. They also claim that warm water is usually better for cramps, as warm liquids increase blood flow and may relax cramped muscles. However I couldn’t find a scientific evidence for it, but perhaps it is worth a try as a home remedy.

      Some people experience symptoms such as dizziness and outbreaks after doing extreme detoxing, and the symptoms range from mild to severe, depending on the person and what they’ve taken. But drinking lemon water is a gentle detox and should not cause these things, especially if you don’t combine it with any other extreme detox measurements. I also don’t believe it should cause any feet pain, and you need to find out if the aching feet result from something else. You should not suffer while doing it. If you suspect however that there is any link between the two, as only you know your body best, then discontinue with it or limit the amount of lemon water, for example every alternate days rather than every day.

        I have read most of every ones comments and you may go with lemon water, but I can’t believe than not anyone has an alkaline machine! I have one installed in my home it’s the best thing I have ever purchased for the money.       Health writer Theresa Cheung, author of “The Lemon Juice Diet”, has written extensively about the benefits of lemon juice for dieters, and you can find more information about it in my article “How to Use Lemons to Lose Weight“. However lemon water is not a magic solution for weight loss, and will not do the job alone. There are many factor in how fast you lose weight, for example: your nutrition, how physically active you are, your metabolism, hormonal issues and more. So every person has a different time frame of losing weight.

Everything you have said on this issue of lemon water therapy is true……Please I have a little problem on how to combine this practice with the one am already on now. There is a water solution that I do take which contains a tablet called ‘Aquatabs’. Should I use the same water for the lime or fresh one? Please.

      From what I’ve seen, Aquatabs are water purification tablets to prevent water borne diseases such as cholera, typhoid and dysentery. I don’t see any reason why you cannot use the same water solution and add to it the lemon or lime.
