The liver is one of the most vital organs in our body. It has a wide range of functions, including detoxification, protein synthesis, helping to regulate hormone activity, and production of biochemicals necessary for digestion. Everything we eat must be processed by the liver before it can be distributed throughout the body. The liver is necessary for survival – currently there is no way to compensate for the absence of liver function in the long term.

This organ plays a major role in metabolism and is the master detoxifier – it cleanse the system not only of environmental toxins, but also of metabolic waste. So as you can see, the health of our body is directly related to the liver functioning at its peak. Looking after you liver is also one of the 70 habits featured in my e-book 70 Powerful Habits For A Great Health which will guide you how to take positive steps to improve your wellness and overall health.

There are some herbs that are particularly good for liver cleansing:

Burdock – One of the common uses for this herb is as a liver detoxifier.  When studies looked at what effects burdock might have on livers that have been damaged by alcohol consumption, the results seemed to show that burdock helped the liver to heal and protected it from further damage. The conclusion was that burdock’s powerful antioxidants may be responsible, at least in part, for the results.

Dandelion – It is mainly the root that helps cleanse the liver and treat gallbladder problems. Compounds in the root cause an increase in bile production and this helps to improve digestion. It also helps the liver to digest foods and remove toxins quickly and efficiently.

Wild yam – Wild yam root has been known to be very effective for liver health. It lowers cholesterol and blood pressure levels and thus reduces the stress in the body and increases the efficiency of the liver.

Yellow dock – Traditionally, yellow dock root has been thought to be a blood purifier and general detoxifier, especially for the liver. Yellow dock root stimulates bile production which helps digestion, particularly of fats. It also helps prevent any toxins from entering the gallbladder, bloodstream and liver, which in turn reduces these  systems overall workload. Yellow dock root can also effectively help to get rid of foreign substances, which could create access burden on the liver.

Milk thistle seeds – The seeds of milk thistle are known as a powerful cleanser of the liver. They contain phytochemicals that stimulate the secretion of bile from the liver and gallbladder. Click here to learn how to make liver cleansing infusion with milk thistle seeds.

Garlic – Garlic contains many sulfur-containing compounds that activate the liver enzymes responsible for flushing out toxins from the body. This vegetable also contains allicin which is a powerful compound proven to help protect the liver from toxic damage, and helps in the detoxification process. Read more information in my previous article on how to use garlic as a medicine.

Liver Cleansing Tonic Recipe

2 parts dandelion root
1 part wild yam root
1 part yellow dock root
1 part burdock root

Use 4 tbsp of herb mixture per 1 liter of water. Place the herbs in a small saucepan and cover with cold water. Heat slowly and simmer, covered for 20-45 minutes. The longer you simmer the herbs, the stronger the tea will be. If the flavor is too bitter for you, you can add stevia, honey or natural maple syrup to taste. Drink 2-3 cups a day.

According to WebMd website, some people may have mild swelling, redness, and soreness where the shot was given, and this goes away in a few days. WebMd mentions that less than 1% of people who receive these vaccine may have more severe swelling, pain, or redness where the shot was given or muscle aches. If I were you, I would consult with your doctor who knows your medical history and has the full picture of your medical condition.

      • Jackie Scoones says:

the flu shot and the pneumonia shot had mercury in them, apart from childhood vaccinations all vaccines have mercury in them, that is probably what has upset your liver and caused your arm to swell.yes a detox would help, but beware of any further vaccinations.

  2. crystal says:

I suffered 2 years after I had the flu shot. I was allergic to the chemicals in the flu shot. It was mercury. I looked up what was in the shot and discovered there are are a lot of chemicals in practically all our meds that’s why half of the medications help you while the other half slowly kills us. Pharmaceutical companies get away with murder I my opinion. That is why more &ore people are now demanding accountability from them and the food industries…such as showing what’s in our food and stopping companies from adding known substances into medications and food.

    • Jenny says:

You can get dried herbs from your local herb shop or health store, or find places that sell them online and deliver to your country.

  4. Sara says:

Liver cleansing tonic recipe is 2-3 cups per day. Can you tell me how many days? Thank you.

    • Jenny says:

Hi Sara, your question is indeed important and is being asked frequently in herbal remedies. Unlike conventional medications that have been scientifically researched and dosage and duration have been recommended, in herbal remedies it’s hard to find “set guidelines” as no scientific studies have been made. Usually you do it for several days and then take a break for 1-3 months.

I have a question regarding detoxification of the liver, gall bladder and kidneys. I have had a pain that resembles heartburn and sometimes is worsened by foods that I eat. They pain gets pretty intense. I’ve been evaluated by several doctors. One even ordered a round of parasite testing. My pancreas has also been checked. No doctor has figured out what my problem is. I’m almost positive my gallbladder isn’t functioning properly and sometimes my I feel like a sharp object is traveling through my gut. I often get a pain in the kidney area that drops me to my knees. I’ve gained about 15 pounds in the last year without a change in any of my habits. I eat very healthy lots of veggies, fruits, limited meat and very limited fast food. I’m lactose intolerant and have seizures. I’ve switched to green tea most mornings and coffee once or twice a week. I’m having a Rainsoft system installed today to remove the impurities from my water. Maybe that will help. I’m at my wits end. Any ideas???
