Some of the most unassuming spices can be amazing sources of health. Not many would guess that the small and ordinary looking cumin seed (also called jeera) can become your faithful weight loss aide.

A study published in the journal Complimentary Therapies in Clinical Practice was the first to reveal the potential cumin seeds have for dieting. Using this spice can help you lose weight quicker and influence the body’s fat profile in a positive way by reducing the levels of harmful lipids in the blood.

Research on Cumin and Body Fat

Iranian scientists from the Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences included 88 women who were considered overweight or obese into their study. They randomly divided them into two groups.

  • One group ate 3 grams of cumin powder daily, mixed into 5 grams of yogurt.
  • The control group consumed yogurt too, but without any additions.
  • Both groups received dietary advice and reduced their daily caloric intake by 500 calories.

Study Results

Different body measurements and parameters were taken before the study and after 3 months of dieting.

  • Women who were eating cumin, lost 3 pounds (1.4 kilograms) more compared to those in the non-cumin group.
  • More impressively, the cumin group members decreased body fat percentage by 14.64%—almost triple the 4.91% loss posted by the control group—apparently due to the addition of the fat-burning spice.

The women in the treatment group also experienced reduced levels of fasting cholesterol, triglycerides (a type of fat associated with atherosclerosis, heart disease and diabetes) and LDL (bad) cholesterol, while their levels of HDL (good) cholesterol increased.

Furthermore, the ladies who took cumin had larger reductions in body mass index and waist circumference.

The authors of the study concluded that cumin powder can significantly boost the success of a weight reduction diet.

How does Cumin Work?

Cumin is rich in antioxidants and phytosterols. Phytosterols are natural substances of plant origin that are similar to cholesterol in their structure and function. They inhibit the absorption of harmful cholesterol in the digestive tract, which could be the explanation for their weight-reducing effect.

Previous clinical trials have shown that consumption of foods enriched with at least 0.8 grams of plant sterols or stanols lowers the levels of LDL cholesterol.

Cumin has also been associated with cancer prevention. The seeds are an excellent source of iron and support the function of the immune system.

How to Consume Cumin?

3 grams of cumin powder, the dose that was used in the study, comes to a little less than a teaspoon. If you find the mixture of yogurt and cumin slightly unappetizing, you can try other ways to incorporate the powerful spice into your diet:

1. Add ground cumin to roasted or sautéed veggies.

2. Use it when you make hummus or guacamole.

3. Make a cup of warming beverage by boiling cumin seeds in water and letting them steep for 10 minutes.

4. Sprinkle it over nuts or other healthy snacks.

5. Use it to spice your lentil soup.

6. Add it to plain brown rice to give it an exotic kick (you can also mix in dried apricots and almonds).

Other Spices for Weight Loss

There are 10 other spices that you can use for weight loss and you can read about them in my article about the best spices and herbs for weight loss.

cumin tea with a touch of honey for weight loss? have you seen this used and be beneficial please?

        • Jenny says:

In the study the participants consumed 3 grams of cumin powder daily mixed into 5 grams of yogurt, and didn’t consume it as a tea, so I can’t really know. I haven’t used it personally for weight loss purposes because my weight is fine, but I like to use this spice anyway in cooking.

Dear all, Cumin or Jeera is a common spice in all Indian vegetable or non-veg cooking & is consumed daily in one or other form but I don’t see any significant loss of fat or specifically belly fat. I am also an user & a sufferer too of belly fat.

  9. Arzu anu says:

Thnks for usefull info n can u tell me at exactly what time should we cosume it ???

    • Jenny says:

It is mentioned in the study that the 88 women were put into 2 groups for 3 months either with or without the help of 3 g cumin powder with yogurt at two meals (so I understand from it that it was each time 1.5 g cumin + yogurt whereas the control group received the same amount of yogurt, but without cumin). However I’m not sure if it’s really important when you consume it. I guess you can be flexible and adapt it to what is suitable for you.

  10. Tanja says:

I just came across your website and I’m so glad that I did! First, I’d just like to say thank you for taking the time to post all of the great information on the various health articles. Having wisdom for a healthy body is worth more than all of money than in this world! Too bad I didn’t realize this myself before having health issues, but that’s why I’m here now, to try to help myself to get healthier again. I’ve been learning about essential oils and herbs over the past couple years but there’s so much more that I want to learn, and am eager to learn!

One question that I have about this particular article, but it’s regarding the form of cumin. What I mean is which form of cumin is most beneficial, oil or powder from the herb? I was taking cumin oil capsules for about 6 months but I didn’t see a very big decrease in the inflammation that I’ve been fighting! I’m desperate to get this inflammation down but I also have a sensitive tummy so I try to be cautious of what I’m taking so that I don’t get too much acid and end up with heartburn. Thank you for your time, and I would greatly appreciate your input on this subject.

    Blessings and peace,

  11. yogie says:

Hi, thank you for your helpful articles. They give great information to those people who wants to be healthy and in good shape. Really appreciated. Keep up the good work. More power to you and your whole team! God bless you all abundantly!

  12. nipho says:

whr do i get a coconut oil

  13. Gloria says:

Can I mix the cumin in veggie/fruit smoothie? I make them every morning, juice or coconut milk with lean protein powder, veggies/fruits, coconut oil and cumin.

  14. Viv says:

Is it just as effective to use cumin in a gel pill form? If so, how many per day or how many milligrams? If I eat too much of the powder it upsets my stomach.

    • Jenny says:

3 grams (3,000 mg) of cumin powder was the dose that was used in the study, which is a little less than a teaspoon. I’m not sure about taking cumin in other forms (don’t confuse it with black cumin supplement, it’s not the same). You can divide the amount of cumin along the day instead of consuming it at once. It may help to prevent upset stomach.

      • mark shepherd says:

        • Jenny Hills says:

Black cumin and cumin are NOT the same thing. Black cumin is Nigella sativa (often called black seed, which has many health benefits – see my article about it here). However in this article the research talks about cumin (Cuminum cyminum) – see my article about the health benefits of cumin here.

  15. kavya Saravanan says:

Hi I drink cumin seeds which is boiled with water at night and have it in empty stomach in morning. Is this helpful to reduce weight?

    • Jenny says:

In the study the cumin was not consumed as a tea, but according to the Ayurvedic medicine creating a detox tea made of cumin seeds, coriander seeds and fennel seeds tea is a favorite tool for fighting fat. The combination of ingredients helps to improve digestion and break down fat (read more about it here).

  16. alana says:

We have roasted cumin seeds can I use that?

    • Jenny says:

I believe you can lightly roast the cumin seeds (dry roasting without oil) for a short period of time and it will still be ok, although I can’t really be sure as the study used unroasted cumin.

  17. Beauti says:

Come on people, most of you are asking questions that she has already answered in the post above! Please read the post before asking your questions!

  18. sonia says:

Hi jeny jeny plz help me iam thyroid patient iwant to loose 20kg what should I do which thing I use apple vinegar or cumin powder what plz suggest and quantity and method also

    • Jenny says:

Hi Sonia, people who suffer from under-active thyroid (hypothyroidism) often struggle to lose weight. I think you might benefits from reading the article by Mary Shomon who is thyroid disease expert and who explains the mechanism behind it. Although she doesn’t have a magic solution, it’s still worth reading – “Losing Weight with Hypothyroidism“. I don’t know if you take medication to treat the problem, but talk to your doctor (preferably endocrinologist) who can recommend a treatment plan for hypothyroidism.

Hiii to drink cumin seed water for whole day…plzzzzz suggest. I m confused

    • Jenny says:

You can prepare cumin tea (see instructions here) or you have other options in the article under the title “How to Consume Cumin?”, such as sprinkling it over yogurt or other dishes.

  24. aarthi says:

after reading in website today onward i started drinking cumin water mixed with lemon i have to loose around 30 kgs i am doing exercise for past 2 months i didnt find any change. i didn’t do dieting how long shall i drink cumin water, or 2 times shall i consume it

    • Jenny says:

Losing 30 kgs takes time. You didn’t gain it in 2 months and you will not lose it in 2 months, although I would have expected that you will see some results after that time. The best combination to get the best result is to combine exercising (both cardio like aerobics as well as resistance like weights) and a proper healthy nutrition. I’m not sure what you mean by saying you didn’t do dieting, and what’s the level and frequency of your exercising, but cumin water alone will not do the job as it’s not a miracle solution. It’s an add-on to other measurements to help you reach your goal faster. Also every person loses weight at a different pace so there is no rule that applies all.

      • aarthi says:

mam daily i am doing morning walker exercise only for half an hour daily,i know i am not on strict diet i binge all the food stuffs, but 2 days i am drinking cumin water will i be able to reduce the weight

        • Jenny says:

Daily walking is great, but you need to monitor what you eat too. You don’t need to have a strict diet, but you need to stop binging and stop consuming unhealthy food. If you can combine resistance exercises in addition to the cardio work (walking) it will help you to tone the body and burn more fat, as muscle tissue burns more calories, even when you’re at rest, than body fat. The cumin is an add-on to the other measurement and you can incorporate it into your daily nutrition.

  25. aarthi says:

mam i could find some changes in me after drinking cumin water for 8 days my left hand is reduced now i can easily put the dress

  26. Shreyanka says:

How to drink cumin water ?
Like hot or cold or else warm ???

  27. Bubu says:

Can you use cumin for weight loss while breastfeeding

    • Jenny says:

I couldn’t find a reliable information about cumin effect on nursing mothers or infants, so I suggest that you consult with your doctor.

  28. Vivian says:

I make a tea with cinnamon cumin turmeric ginger and sweeten with honey it slowly reduces weight and inflammation

  29. Aarti says:

Hi i am using cumin seeds water in the morning since last three months but there is no impact on my weight.

    • Jenny Hills says:

Many people think that by taking only one measurement (cumin) they will miraculously lose weight. Unfortunately cumin is not a magic solution. It is one of the tools to help you to reach your goals faster, but if you neglect to be physically active or eat unhealthy food, the cumin will not solve the problem. You need to be realistic and honest with yourself and ask yourself what other actions you take to maintain a proper weight.

  30. Joe says:

Jenny, do you think cumin could be helpful to asthma patients or what do you suggest

  31. Riz says:

Ys with cumin powder,u cn finish asthma. My younger brother did this for 1 month and nw he is perfectly good.

  32. Riz says:

  33. RK says:

Can we take cumin tea after take lemon honey water

  34. Sten says:

Hi! I’ve read all of the comments… Just wondering, if it is so good and benefitial, what is going on with the results??? No one wrote a word about any personal achievement after treatment with cumin powder…. And why? 🙂

    • Jenny Hills says:

I believe it’s because it takes time to see results, and by the time people see (or don’t see) results, they forget where they read it. I have another article about clearing a stuffy nose in 1 minute, and in this case you can see immediate results, so people left quite a lot of comments regarding their own experience.

  35. Cindy says:

Hi Jenny. I am gonna try this from today. But worried wil this affect our hormonal changes??? Just like delaying of menstrual cycle? ?? Or any other effects.

    • Jenny Hills says:

Hi Cindy, in this case we are talking about a little less than a teaspoon of cumin as per the study. I was unable to find scientific information to determine an appropriate range of doses for cumin, although WebMD website mentions that “Cumin is LIKELY SAFE when taken by mouth in food amounts and POSSIBLY SAFE when taken by mouth in appropriate medicinal amounts”. You can have a look here at possible side effects, as well as interactions with other medications. In any case, if you have any concern, please check with your doctor, as I’m not a doctor.

  36. sanaya says:

My daughter is eating cumin seeds continuously daily is it harmful to her health.

    • Jenny Hills says:

In spices and foods cumin is used as a flavoring component and eating it in normal food quantities is fine. You can have a look at webMD website for more information about side effects, interactions and dosing.

  37. Meena says:

I am having cumin warm water with lemon and ginger in morning last two weeks.but still I am not reducing weight. In fact,in Wedside they comment that by this you get result.and you will loss weight 5 or 10 kg.

    • Jenny Hills says:

Hi Meena, cumin is not a miracle solution and needs to be combined with other measurements to speed up the weight loss process. Are you physically active? do you eat a healthy nutrition? Also for some people it takes longer to lose weight. You didn’t gain the weight in one day and you are not going to lose it in one day. It is a process that requires more than just cumin. The cumin is just an add-on.

  38. anita garg says:

i am drinking cumin water in the morning from two days. But not with honey and lemon. Is still it will work. I have diabetes so can not take sugar. Lemon give acidity. Please respond.

  39. deebiga says:

lots of doubt…about cumin..I m gng to take cumin seed daily aftr my dinner with hot watr does it really wrk..

  40. Dinora says:

Hi, just wondering, it’s plain yogurt? If so, honey can be added?
    Thank you!

  41. Helen says:

How many kgs can one lose when having cumin ,honey and lemon every morning before any meal and green tea with honey in the afternoon and chia seed before going to bed

    • Jenny Hills says:

The rate of losing weight varies between different people and depends on various factors such as the level of physical activity, nutrition, metabolism etc, so unfortunately I cannot give you a specific answer.

  42. Arwa kothari says:

Can i drink cumin water for 5 days in a week coz in weekends i wake up late n cannot make to drink it plz reply will it work

    • Jenny Hills, Medical Writer and Researcher says:

You don’t have to consume cumin water in the morning. You can consume it in other times of the day. Also you can consume cumin in other ways, such as in yogurt as per the study or in other ways suggested in the article.
