It’s not much fun to have a blocked nose. You can’t breathe properly and sleeping can become a painful experience and the only thing you can think of is how to get rid of your stuffy nose quickly.

A runny nose can be just as annoying, even embarrassing, especially when you’re surrounded by people and all your attention is put on constantly blowing your nose and cleaning your face.

To deal with nasal congestion, most people reach for over-the-counter nasal sprays. But there are disadvantages to using chemical substances. To begin with, these sprays are drugs, so they come with side effects and can be addictive.

It’s much better to master an approach that is less invasive and, in many cases, more effective. The simple technique I present in this article is based on acupressure. It uses gentle pressure to four points of the face to help you clear your nose.

How To Naturally Clear a Stuffy or Runny Nose

Follow the instructions and see how your nose reacts.

General instructions:

  • Use your fingertips to apply gentle pressure.
  • Use round movements – the movement is a pushing-releasing type of rotation.
  • You should not feel any pain.
  • Do the cycle 3 times.

Point 1:

  • Point 1 is located on a cavity at the corner of the nostrils – it’s the bottom part of your nostrils.
  • Gently push the nostrils together with a rotating movement. As you do this, you almost close, and then open the nostrils.
  • Perform the movement 10 times.
  • Make sure not to push on the nose cartilage. You’re only pressing the bottom part of the nostrils.

Point 2:

  • Point 2 is located just below the corner of the eyes, near the nose, where the tears come out.
  • Perform a gentle rotation at this point 10 times. Don’t lift your fingers, but just move the skin, so you feel the corner of your eye as you push.

Point 3:

  • Point 3 is behind your earlobe, at the bottom part of the ear, in the cavity just below the cartilage.
  • Push and release the point 10 times, without applying pressure to the cartilage. The rotation you do is not wide, but a subtle movement.

Point 4:

  • The last point is the earlobe itself.
  • Gently massage the earlobe 10 times.

After going through the above four acupressure points three times, you should feel immediate symptom relief. For best results, repeat the procedure again after 10 minutes.

The described technique is simple, safe, can be done anywhere and anytime, and comes at no cost. It is also a good and empowering experience to be able to use your own body to heal yourself. If successful, pass it on, and help other people control and use their bodies better, too.

I would love to hear back from you about the results of using this simple technique.

What recommendations do you have for nasal drip?

    • Jenny says:

Nasal drip can result from various things like cold and flu, allergies, sinusitis, cold weather, certain medications etc. You can try this acupressure technique or use saline nasal sprays or nasal irrigation (such as a neti pot) to flush excess mucus, bacteria, allergens, and other irritating substances out of the sinuses. If it’s allergic reaction, remove allergens from the environment when possible. Also a humidifier can add moisture to the air, which relieves the irritation in the nasal cavity. Nasal drip usually clears up on its own, but you need to see your doctor if it persist for more than 10 days or if you have other symptoms like high fever or sinus pain which may be a sign of an infection.

I like to use facial cupping to clear my sinuses and I use it on my clients as well. I found a great professional and at home system from http://www.bellabaci.com and it’s really easy to use. Thanks for a great article! 🙂

  5. Heather says:

it didn’t work for me. Point one hurt because my nose is so raw and point three was really tender and kept popping for some reason. I wasn’t pressing hard, so I am not quite sure why. Nose is still stuffy and now my ear is crackling when I move my jaw certain ways. 🙁

    • ZNH says:

I wonder if xylitol gum would work for you like it did for me. Xylitol is supposed to help the eustscian tubes drain and that relieved me of serious sinus and ear problems. Within an hour of chewing that gum a big glob of stuff dislodged and moved down the throat and I could immediately hear clearly again and sinus’ started to clear up nicely. I got this kind of gum at Whole Foods

    • Peg says:

I had the same issue at first. I covered my raw skin in Vaseline. I just kept doing the pressure points gently and by the end of the day I really did feel better. I also just packed my nose full of Kleenex while at home allone so I would not have to wipe it anymore. The Vaseline helped a lot.

    • Ava says:

It didn’t work for me either 🙁 i did what they said, but i don’t know what i did wrong. 🙁

I’ve been on all kinds of meds that don’t work for any length of time or in most cases not at all. This actually worked and I was able to close my mouth and breathe thru my nose and I was blown away how simple and effective it was.please send me information on chronic back and neck pain from a fractured back from car accident, also ulcerative colitis, ⬆️ cholesterol, chronic constipation.Do you offer a book on natural remedies and if so I would be seriously interested in one please!

  9. Lawrence says:

I have often used this technique along with a nasal rinse to subdue nasal issues.
I suffer from chronic allergies to dust/ bed mites and tall grass pollen. This technique along with a good round of nasal rinses has always work for me. I find it much more effective than most nasal sprays. For a dry nasal I recommend using saline spray as it is just sterilized water and does what nature intends water to do. thanks for a great article.

  23. Gail Giddings says:

Sadly, it didn’t work for me. But in fairness, I just saw a ENT doc the other day, and he said I have a malformed septum (?) and surgery might (might!) help. If you have any further ideas, I would be open to them, as I do not wish to have the surgery, especially when there’s no guarantee, or even good odds that it would help. It’s really something I wish would get better. God bless.

    • Anna s says:

It sounds like you have a deviated septum. Most people do, but some people have it severely like me. I’m getting septumplasty to fix it and have heard very good results. You just want to make sure that you are older then sixteen so you have a better chance of breathing better. Hope this help, and try doing a little research on septumplasty and its risks. Good luck.

  24. Kenni D says:

I suffer from serious runny nose all through the year and normally get allergy shots to help maintain it but I haven’t been getting the shots lately so my allergy symptoms are returning. Doing these techniques instantly helped, although it seemed only for a few minutes at most.
