I always search for a natural alternatives to the bottled creams and lotions that contain a lot of chemicals. One day I came across an excellent recipe for home made whipped coconut oil body butter by Elizabeth Walling from The Nourished Life blog. Coconut oil is an edible oil extracted from the kernel or meat of matured coconuts harvested from the coconut palm. It has various applications in food, medicine, and industry.

Coconut oil has well known benefits for your skin and is well known for its anti-aging, moisturizing and regenerative effects. As a natural SPF, coconut oil protects your skin against harmful and damaging UV rays. But the list goes on: coconut oil also helps in treating various skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis and many more. No wonder that coconut oil forms the base ingredient of many of our body care products. And more good news, coconut oil can safely be used for your babies and young children too.

Elizabeth’s recipe is light and fluffy moisturiser and very cost effective. What I love about it is that unlike many other recipes that contain many ingredients, this body butter recipe only requires one  ingredient!  The other ingredients are completely optional. It is also very easy and quick and only takes a few minutes. The result is that you will have enough body butter to last for a long time. Another good thing about it is that you can put some of the body butter in a nice jar and it makes a great gift to friends and family!

Here is how Elizabeth from The Nourished Life blog does this body butter. Visit her great website to see more fantastic recipes and articles:

1 cup coconut oil
1 teaspoon vitamin E oil (optional)
a few drops of your favorite essential oils for fragrance (optional)

1. Put all ingredients into a mixing bowl. Note: Do not melt the coconut oil first. It will only whip up if it’s solid.
2. Mix on high speed with a wire whisk for 6-7 minutes or until whipped into a light, airy consistency.
3. Spoon the whipped coconut oil body butter into a glass jar and cover tightly. Store at room temperature, or in the refrigerator if your house is so warm it melts the oil.

Elizabeth added an important tip: she recommends to use electric hand mixer, but a blender or food processor is not suitable with this recipe, because food processor tends to warm the oil too much and prevent it from whipping up.

Luv the natural skin remedies. Thank you for sharing.
How long can they last in a glass jar?

    • Jenny says:

Hi Carmen, if you store it in a dark cool place, away from direct sunlight, it can last for a very long time – up to a year or even more. By that time the quantity will have already run out.

  2. One time before going on vacation I mixed coconut oil with magnesium mineral oil. I used that rather then sunblock the whole time while on vacation and I did not burn at all. Another time I used that sames mixture plus a few drops of hibiscus flower water. Yeah I love coconut oil and the wonders it can do for your skin. Great article!
