Castor oil is one of the best natural hair treatments to strengthen your hair and give it luster and shine. Well known for its health benefits, castor oil can rejuvenate your hair and give it the thickness and strength you desire. Many people also apply castor hair regularly to their scalp to encourage hair growth and prevent hair thinning and hair loss.

As well as helping hair to grow thicker, castor oil helps to detangle hair, reduce frizz, and keeps your scalp and hair well moisturized. The other benefits of castor oil on your hair are that it helps to keep dandruff away, keep your scalp healthy, and clears scalp infections. You can also add other ingredients to castor oil to boost its hair growth potential.

This article looks at the scientific research behind the benefits of castor oil for your hair. You will also find out if any studies have shown a link between castor oil and hair growth. You can also use the natural castor oil hair treatments that I will mention in this article if you want to get great, healthy looking hair.

What is Castor Oil?

Castor oil is a pale oil with a mild odor that is obtained from the seeds of the castor oil plant – Ricinus communis.  According to the journal Lipid Insights, castor oil’s main component is ricinoleic acid which makes up 90% of its content.1

Castor oil has been well known for its medicinal properties. It’s often used as a laxative, but has a wide variety of other health benefits, including many pertaining to hair and hair growth, as well as for skin. For example:

What is Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO)

Jamaican black castor oil (JBCO) has become a very popular oil to use on the hair and scalp. Jamaican black castor oil has a darker appearance and is used by many people to boost hair growth. The dark color of JBCO comes from the ashes of roasted castor oil seeds being added to the oil.

What are the Benefits of Castor Oil for Hair?

The rich fatty acid content of castor oil makes it perfect for massaging into your scalp to keep it healthy and moisturized.

The International Journal of Molecular Medicine and Advance Science reports that castor oil contains antifungal and antibacterial properties. Castor oil also contains various vitamins and minerals which help to boost scalp health.2

Because castor oil is rich in fatty acids, applying it to your hair will help to give your hair an amazing shine. You will also find that it’s easier to manage tangles and you will have less frizz. Castor oil is also commonly used to regrow eyelashes and eyebrows, improve their thickness and make them shiny and healthy.

Many people have found that Jamaican black castor oil is just as great for your hair as regular cold pressed castor oil.

Castor Oil for Hair Growth

Apart from castor oil helping to keep your scalp healthy and adding shine and silkiness to your hair, castor oil can help encourage healthy hair growth. There has been some interesting scientific research on the properties of castor oil’s effect on preventing hair loss and encouraging hair regrowth.

The Journal of Ethnopharmacology reported that castor oil can help to prevent hair loss in people with androgenic alopecia. Researchers found that ricinoleic acid inhibits a compound associated with hair loss – prostaglandin D2 (PGD2). The study concluded that natural remedies containing ricinoleic acid have the potential to be used in “high-efficacy hair loss treatment.”3

Regarding the role of prostaglandin D2 in male pattern baldness, research has found that balding men have more PGD2 on their scalp. Therefore many treatments to reverse the effects of hair loss concentrate on inhibiting PGD2.4

Castor oil is anti-inflammatory

Another way that castor oil can boost hair growth and help prevent hair thinning is that it is anti-inflammatory. The Cleveland Clinic reports that inflammation around the hair follicle hinders growth and can result in weaker strands of hair.5

A study in the journal Mediators of Inflammation found that ricinoleic acid reduces skin inflammation when topically applied.6

Castor oil keeps the scalp free of infections

Castor oil is also antimicrobial and can help prevent hair loss that is caused due to fungal infections, bacterial infections, or air pollution. The American Journal of Clinical Dermatology reported that fungal infections caused by the Malassezia fungi can result in hair shedding and bald patches.7

Also, a study in 2015 found that the increase of air pollution causes toxins to affect the hair follicles on the scalp resulting in increased loss of hair.8

Many studies have confirmed that castor oil is antimicrobial and contains antioxidants and can help to kill off bacterial, fungal, and other infections on the scalp and skin. This also helps rid your scalp of free radicals that can cause hair loss and premature skin aging.9

Other Benefits of Castor Oil for Hair and Scalp

There is no doubt that castor oil has amazing benefits for your hair and scalp. Of course, it will take some time and patience to see results when using castor oil for hair growth. However, there are other benefits to your hair that you will notice much sooner.

Castor oil helps to fight itchy scalp and gets rid of dandruff. The antifungal properties of castor oil will help you quickly get rid of the causes of dandruff. By applying an anti-fungal castor oil hair mask once a week you will soon notice that your scalp has fewer flakes of skin and won’t itch as much.

Castor oil treats split ends. You can say goodbye to lackluster hair and split ends if you regularly use a castor oil mask on your hair. This is because the fatty acid content of castor oil nourishes your hair to give it a luxurious shine.

Castor oil moisturizes your hair. Castor oil will lock in moisture to your hair and scalp and is the perfect hair conditioner. A little castor oil is all you need to restore shine and texture to your hair and keep your hair follicles healthy.

What is the Best Castor Oil for Hair?

If you want to use castor oil to improve the look of your hair, help encourage hair growth, or prevent hair loss, what is the best kind of castor oil to use?

It is recommended to use regular, cold pressed unrefined organic castor oil on your hair. There is generally no, or very little, smell to castor oil and it is easy to use.

You could also try Jamaican black castor oil (JBCO) for its hair-boosting benefits. Jamaican black castor oil has a more pungent smell to it because ash from the roasted castor beans is added to the natural oil. Many people have used JBCO for hair growth and found that it works very well.

For many people, it comes down to a matter of personal preference in using castor oil or Jamaican black castor oil on their hair. You should always make sure that your castor oil is 100% organic and for cosmetic use.

How to Use Castor Oil to Combat Hair Loss and Encourage Hair Growth

It is very easy to use castor oil as a natural hair growth stimulant. Because castor oil is quite thick, you only need a small amount to get amazing results on your hair. Here is the best way to use castor oil as a natural treatment for your hair.

How often should you use castor oil?

If your aim is to treat hair loss, you will need to apply castor oil on your scalp at least twice weekly, but it’s even better if you can do it three or four times per week for several weeks. You can also add rosemary essential oil which is known to stimulate hair growth, or peppermint essential oil which has also shown to encourage hair growth, and also work out to find the cause of the hair loss.

For split ends and increased shine, Use castor oil 1-2 times a week on your scalp to help keep your hair healthy and shiny. Be careful not to use too much of it (a pea-sized amount should do) or you can end up with an over-oily scalp. However, some people recommend applying castor oil 3-4 times a week for the first couple of weeks.

When to use castor oil?

You should use castor oil on damp, not wet, hair. This helps the oil to get absorbed well into your hair and it is easier to manage.

Wrap your hair in a warm towel (you can also use a shower cap) and leave it for two to eight hours. You can also leave it overnight. This will give the castor oil enough time to penetrate the hair follicles and hydrate your scalp and hair thoroughly.

How to remove castor oil?

Castor oil can be tricky to get out of your hair. It may take a couple of washes with shampoo to remove all the oil from your hair. However, when you dry and style your hair you will instantly see the difference.

When should you expect results?

Castor oil works to strengthen your hair strands and improve hair growth. However, you shouldn’t expect a quick fix. Your hair takes time to grow and castor oil will gradually improve the health of your scalp and hair. So stick with regularly using castor oil every week to see improvements in hair growth.

Where to buy castor oil? Many natural food stores or pharmacies stock 100% organic castor oil. Or you can buy castor oil or Jamaican castor oil online. Buying online has the advantage because you can read users’ reviews of the product to find the best castor oil for your hair. For example this organic castor oil has thousands of reviews and this Jamaican black castor oil has more than 5000 reviews.

Homemade Castor Oil Hair Masks

Here are some of the best castor oil hair masks that will help to stimulate hair growth and give your hair an amazing shine. These hair masks also include natural ingredients that are scientifically proven to boost hair growth and revitalize hair.

In these castor oil hair masks, you can use either regular castor oil or Jamaican black castor oil depending on your preference.

As a general note, castor oil has a thick consistency, so you can mix it with coconut oil, olive oil or jojoba oil in a half and half ratio. This will make the mask easier to distribute throughout your hair. You can add these oils to any of the following castor oil hair masks even if it’s not in the ingredient list.

Castor oil and peppermint oil mask for hair growth

Castor oil and peppermint oil are the perfect combination for hair mask to help hair grow back and fight hair loss.

Studies have shown that peppermint oil helps to accelerate hair growth. The journal Toxicological Research found that peppermint oil stimulates the hair follicles and encourages hair regrowth.10

How to use:

For this home remedy for hair growth, you just need some castor oil and peppermint oil.

  1. Mix 100ml castor oil with 2-3 drops peppermint oil.
  2. Massage the castor oil hair directly into your scalp by parting your damp hair.
  3. Keep doing this until you have covered your whole scalp.
  4. Leave the castor oil hair mask for 2-3 hours (or overnight) before washing it out with shampoo.
  5. For best results, use at least 2 times a week to boost hair growth.

Jamaican black castor oil and rosemary oil for hair growth and shiny hair

Jamaican black castor oil will encourage faster hair growth and help to keep your scalp free of infection. This hair mask also includes rosemary oil and coconut oil to help your hair grow stronger and faster.

The journal Skinmed reported that rosemary oil for hair growth is just as effective as some pharmaceutical applications that address hair loss issues. In fact, research showed that rosemary oil had fewer side effects than minoxidil when being used on the scalp to treat alopecia.11 Minoxidil is a pharmaceutical drug used to treat hair loss.

You can add coconut oil to this hair treatment because of its amazing benefits for your hair. For example, the Journal of Cosmetic Science reported that the structure of coconut oil helps to nourish hair and prevent protein loss.12 Coconut oil also has antibacterial properties and it helps rosemary oil penetrate your scalp and hair shafts to boost growth.

How to use:

This Jamaican black castor oil, coconut oil and rosemary hair mask helps to keep your scalp healthy and encourage hair growth. Here is how to make the hair treatment at home:

  1. Mix together 2 teaspoons Jamaican black castor oil, 2 teaspoons warm coconut oil, and 2-3 drops rosemary oil.
  2. Massage the warm oil into your scalp for 5-10 minutes. This helps to stimulate blood circulation to your scalp, rejuvenates the hair, and stimulates hair growth.
  3. Leave on for 2-3 hours (or overnight) before washing out with your favorite natural shampoo.
  4. Repeat at least twice a week for the best hair growth results.

Castor oil and garlic hair mask to boost hair growth

Although it may sound unconventional, garlic is a great natural ingredient to help hair grow faster. The antimicrobial properties of both garlic and castor oil will also help to control other scalp issues like dandruff and itching.

A study published in the Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology reported that a gel containing garlic helped to induce hair regrowth and treat hair loss symptoms.13

You can also add some tea tree oil to the hair mask to help combat fungal scalp infections. Various studies have confirmed the fact that tea tree oil is a natural antifungal agent.14 Tea tree oil has many other benefits for your hair and scalp.

How to use:

This hair mask recipe contains garlic oil and castor oil to improve the health of your hair and stimulate hair growth. You can find simple instructions on how to make garlic oil in my article about the benefits of garlic for hair growth.

  1. In a bowl, mix 5 tablespoons garlic oil, 1 tablespoon castor oil, and 1 tablespoon warm coconut oil.
  2. To this mixture, add 10 drops tea tree oil, 5 drops rosemary oil, and 5 drops peppermint oil.
  3. Massage small amounts of the natural hair treatment to your scalp until your whole scalp is covered.
  4. Leave on for 2 hours before washing out with a good quality natural shampoo.

Castor oil and olive oil for healthy hair

Olive oil is another excellent oil to boost the health of your hair. When combined with olive oil, castor oil is an even better hair mask because the antioxidant properties of olive oil remove free radicals from your scalp.

The journal Clinics in Dermatology reported that virgin olive oil is a natural skin protector and is an important source of antioxidants.15

How to use:

If you have dry and brittle hair that breaks easily, then make your own castor oil and olive oil hair mask to help improve your hair condition. This is what you should do:

  1. Mix 2 tablespoons olive oil and 2 tablespoons castor oil.
  2. Add 6-8 drops of tea tree oil (or peppermint oil or rosemary oil) and thoroughly mix.
  3. Apply to your scalp, taking some time to massage in the hair treatment.
  4. Leave for 2-3 hours and then wash out with your favorite shampoo.
  5. Use 1-2 times a week to encourage hair growth and add shine to your hair.

Jamaican castor oil and onion juice revitalizing hair mask

Onion juice is another potent ingredient that you can use along with Jamaican black castor oil to revitalize your hair and keep a healthy head of hair.

Research published in the Journal of Dermatology found that onion juice can be used to treat male pattern baldness. The juice from onions helped to stimulate hair re-growth and make hair grow faster. In fact, patients showed result within 4 weeks of regularly putting the onion juice on their scalps.16

How to use:

Win your battle against hair loss by using a castor oil and onion juice hair mask weekly. This is what you should do:

  1. Mix together 2 tablespoons castor oil and 2 tablespoons onion juice.
  2. Massage the hair treatment into your scalp making sure that your entire scalp is covered.
  3. Leave the hair mask for 2 hours.
  4. Wash out with a natural shampoo then dry and style as usual.

Jamaican black castor oil moisturizing hair mask

Honey, aloe vera, and Jamaican black castor oil combine to make a great moisturizing hair mask to help keep your hair lush and prevent split ends.

Honey has been shown to help reduce itching, scalp dermatitis, and flaking thanks to its soothing antibacterial and antifungal properties. A study published in a European medical journal found that honey also helps to reduce hair loss that is associated with seborrheic dermatitis.17

Aloe vera is a great all around treatment for your skin and scalp to help lock in moisture and reduce inflammation.18

How to use:

To make this moisturizing hair mask to keep your hair silky smooth and encourage hair growth, this is what you should do:

  1. Mix 1 tablespoon castor oil, 1 tablespoon pure aloe vera gel, and 1 tablespoon honey.
  2. Massage into your scalp for 5-10 minutes.
  3. Leave for 30 minutes to help improve the health of your scalp and condition your hair.
  4. Rinse out with your favorite natural shampoo.

Castor oil hair serum

You can also use castor oil as the basis for a homemade hair serum for shiny-looking hair and to keep your hair in good condition.

How to use:

  1. Mix together 3 tablespoons castor oil and 1 tablespoon jojoba oil.
  2. Put the castor oil serum into a dark colored dropper bottle.
  3. Use the dropper to apply small amounts to your scalp and hair roots while your hair is still damp.
  4. Continue doing this until you cover your whole scalp.
  5. Lightly comb your hair to coat all your strands of hair.
  6. Dry and style as usual.

If you find that the castor oil serum leaves your hair too oily, try using less on your scalp.

Other Natural Methods for Treating Hair Loss

Onion juice was found to be a natural treatment for hair loss and for promoting hair growth, and I’ve mentioned in my article on how to use onion juice oil to improve and regrow your hair.

Rosemary can also help in treating hair loss and you can get more information on how to use it in my article on how to use rosemary for treating hair loss.

According to a research garlic can help you to grow your hair – get the full instructions in my post on how to use garlic for hair growth.

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) can also encourage hair growth – get all the information in my article on why you should wash your hair with ACV.

There are certain foods and nutrients that you must include in your diet in order to have healthy, shiny and strong hair – read about them in my article about the best foods and nutrients for healthy, strong and shiny hair.

Peppermint essential oil can also help you to regrow your hair.

Saw palmetto is another natural ingredient which can stop hair loss and promote hair growth.

You can also combine castor oil with almond oil for hair growth. Almonds and almond oil contain a high amount of magnesium. One of the reasons for hair thinning is a magnesium and zinc deficiency in the body. So, by regularly massaging sweet almond oil onto to your scalp, you can help boost hair growth and prevent further hair loss.

  1. Rita meshu says:

Where do u get the castor oil

    • Jenny says:

Hi Rita, some grocery stores have it, or try drug-stores, health food stores or online (like Amazon).

      • Shrutie says:

How much time it will take for better results ?

        • Jenny says:

It takes a while until you notice results, probably several weeks or even more (it’s hard to be more specific but it’s not a quick fix).

          • Beverly says:

Jenny, to me it would seem more beneficial if you apply the oil mixture to your scalp and hair sparingly, especially if your hair type is between a 4b and 4c and in its natural state. I never rinse it out.

      • Hira malik says:

Hey am using castor oil with olive , coconut and almond oil.. And i also add vitamin E capsule

        • Nudrat Siddiqui says:

Hira did you find any difference in hair growth? Since I am experiencing hair loss problem, I used to have very nice shiny and straight hairs. But my hairs have lost shine and also suffering with hair falling issue. The mixture that you mentioned can make any difference?

    • Naya Quinn says:

Hi. Recently im using castor oil (Apollo Cathartic/Purgative) but I mixed it with Mineral oil. I’ve been using it just last week. Now, I was just heard from my friend that Apollo is not quite safe and when Im done washing my hair, the oil is still at my hair and whenever im going to school, the oil last until the day ends. Is it normal or because I used mineral oil?? And I used it too for my eyebrows and eyelashes. By the way Im from Philippines, Cebu. If you have any best products to recommend, I really appreciate that much.

      • Aleisa Agquiz says:

Castor oil is still castor oil. It will still work. The ones from the drugstores are just refined so that it can be taken internally. You should probably wash your hair twice if you noticed that the oil is still there. I’m also from the Philippines and I also use the Apollo brand (since I don’t want to order online).

      • Kayathri says:

try not to use mineral oil as it sticks to your hair and difficult to wash out.

    • sitttiiiii says:

I HAVE GOOD NEWS. I WAS LOOKING FOR CASTOR OIL IN THE PHILIPPINES BECAUSE IM FROM ZAMBOANGA AND I DIT NOT FOUND ANYTHING AT THE MARKETS. BUT I WAS ABLE TO BUY CASTOR OIL ONLINE AND I ONLY PAY 300 PESOS FOR ORGANIC PURE COLD PRESSED CASTOR OIL. BECAUSE 120 FOR THE CASTOR OIL AND 180 FOR SHIPLING FEE. THE CASTOR OIL IS 60 ML AND I START TO PUT IT ON MY EYELASHES LAST WEEK AND IT REAALLY WORKED WELL

      • karen says:

hi..what about using castor oil on hair everyday? is there any side effects? im from pampanga, philippines and im experiencing hair loss and my hair is so thin now..could you please help me solve this hair problem of mine..thanks

        • Jenny Hills says:

Hi Karen, You can use castor oil on a daily basis, but you will also need to rinse it every day, otherwise your hair and scalp will be greasy and this is not a good thing either. For all natural methods to increase hair growth read my article on How To Make Your Hair Grow Faster: The Best Natural Ways. It’s also a good idea to find out the underlying cause of the hair loss: is it due to hormonal changes, extreme stress, nutritional deficiencies, or something else? (see more info here).

  2. Bongani says:

i’ve got a hereditary bald, will this oil help restore my hair exactly as it was ?

    • Jenny says:

It will not restore it exactly as it was. This is too ambitious if you have no hair at all. It is more suitable for thinning hair, and in this case it can encourage hair growth.

  3. Esther says:

I castor oil, coconut oil and olive oil together with an herbal hair cream, applied it to my natural hair and got wonderful hair length in just a year.

  4. yogita says:

I have lost my front hairs due to a dryer…can I regrow them fast using this

  5. malini says:

Good suggestion our parents n grand parents still using this type oly

  6. Raksha says:

Actually i mix castor oil with coconut oil, olive oil and almond oil in the ratio of 1 tsp each. Is that a good option?? Also when i massage my hair i lose a lot of hairs.. is that natural??

    • Jenny says:

All the oils you’ve mentioned are good for hair care. As for hair loss during massaging – too much massaging (unlike gentle massage) may definitely cause hair loss. Massaging the scalp should boost up the blood circulation and aid therefore hair growth. I can only think that the hair you lost was about to fall out anyway soon. We also lose normally about 100 strands everyday, sometimes less, sometimes more. Follow the oil application with a gentle massage for a few weeks (preferably several months) to see if you notice any improvement.

  7. lokesh says:

I loss too many hairs while applying this oil…will it grow back???
And can i apply it everyday, leave over the night nd shampoo in morning???
Will daily use may show gud result?????

    • Jenny says:

Hi Lokesh, as of losing your hair while applying the oil – see my reply to Raksha who had the same problem.
As to how often to apply it – You can do it on a daily basis and leave it over night and see if you notice any improvement after several weeks (it may take quite a while before you notice results). Results may vary between different people and I guess you will need to try it to see if it works for you.

      • Mumtaz says:

Hi Jenny. I m using castor oil mixed with coconut oil on my husbands bald spot since last 15 days. And i can see amazing results. I can really see new growth there.
But same oil i m using on my thinning hair, there i didn’t noticed anything yet.

        • Jenny Hills says:

Hi Mumtaz, I’m very surprised to hear that only after 15 days you’ve noticed improvement on your husband’s scalp. This is a very short time to see results and usually it takes much longer. Generally speaking, it takes at least two months (and probably more) to see if there is any improvement, so I’m not surprised that you haven’t seen any improvement on yourself. Also there is no guarantee for success – every person is different, and results vary between different people. Some people will find a certain application helpful, while others not. Your husband is the exception here, not you.

  8. Candice says:

Do castor oil, coconut oil, or olive oil take the color out of your hair? I just used full strength apple cider vinegar and it took some of the color out of my hair. Therefore, I’m going to the hair salon tomorrow for a semi-permanent color. Would castor oil remove the color? My hair is very fine. Thank you.

    • Jenny says:

Hi Candice, I will start from the ACV rinse – I don’t know the answer from a personal experience (I don’t have dyed hair), but searching the web this question repeats quite often. From what I’ve read, ACV can fade hair color if done too strongly or too often, but if it is diluted well and isn’t done daily or too often it should be fine. As for applying the oils on colored hair – again, I’ve read comments of readers and saw that many claimed that these oils didn’t affect the color. However, when in doubt, always do a patch test on a small amount of hair to determine whether or not the oil you decide to try will impact the color. When doing patch tests, please note that sometimes the hair may not become discolored immediately and it may take more than one application.

      • sathish says:

hi how to stop hair fall and control dandruf.and then pls say hair regrowth best oil

        • Jenny says:

There are several methods to treat hair loss that you can try: castor oil, onion juice and rosemary. It’s hard to know what will work best for you as every person is different, and what works for one person may not work for another one. It’s a matter of trying and giving enough time to see if you notice any improvement. If you choose castor oil, make sure it’s cold pressed (read the product label). As for dandruff, you can have a look at my article about 6 Effective Ways to Treat Dandruff Naturally.

        • Munna Chowdhury says:

My scalp I’d itching really bad to you think I might be allergic to Castor oil

  11. Rosh says:

for how many days we should apply Castro oil to grow back lost hair

    • Jenny says:

It takes quite a while before noticing results. I believe it requires a good several weeks of application before you notice any improvement, but I couldn’t find a reference for a more specific time-frame as probably results vary between different people.

  12. shivangi says:

hii…i used castor oil mixed with coconut oil and left it out for two hours..then i washed my hairs..and i loose much more hairs then my regular hairfall..so is it normal and should i continue with castor oil or not?

  13. Silo says:

    Hi
I used castor oil with coconut oil , left on my hair through the night , washed in the morning , my God the hair I lost
Do you think I left it for too long or should I stop use of the oil ?
    Thank you

    • Jenny says:

I believe you’ve lost hair during massaging the scalp. I don’t believe you’ve lost the hair because of applying the oil or the length you’ve applied it. Too much massaging, unlike gentle massage, may cause hair loss. Massaging the scalp should boost up the blood circulation and aid hair growth. I can only believe that the hair you lost was about to fall out anyway soon. We also lose normally about 100 strands everyday, sometimes less, sometimes more. Follow the oil application with a gentle massage for a few weeks to see if you notice any improvement. If you don’t see any improvement, discontinue with the treatment.

    • lesson learnt says:

I not trying to be rude at all;however you have to use common sense. If these methods don’t work for you stop using them.

Everyone has different needs. Listen to your own hair, and your body.
If you have a lot of hair lost .
      stop using it

  14. Addy-Dubai says:

Well all those who are saying they lost hair after massage well with massage the damage hair do fall but new takes place, they fall out during wash casue during massage they stuck in other hair… well I recommend mixing caster oil in Almond oil also works really well, also the same mix for eye lashes can make them amazing in one month but I wont recommend doing this every night, cause washing your hair every day is not good at all your scalp lose the natural moisture, so every other day doing is much better.

  15. Liza says:

I m using baidyanath castor oil.is it good a good product???

I’m not sure what baidyanath is, if it a brand or another name for castor oil but look in the list of ingredients to see it’s 100% castor oil.

which is the best mixtureyo use castor oil? castor oil-coconut oil, castor oil- almond oil or castor oil-olive oil?

  17. Suganya P says:

Hello, I read all the discussion above. Actually I had thick and lengthy hair in my childhood days. But, Now I am totally lost my hair. So, finally I was cut my hair and started using Almond oil + castor oil (Hot oil treatment). Please give me some suggestion. This is mail Id “[email protected]

  18. suraksha says:

I have thin straight n slightly brownish hair n also want a good volume of hair i have slightly baldness it was not before.
What to do to get a healthy black n shiny hair with good volume length??

    • pseudonym says:

If you want to have voluminous, black and shiny hair that is healthy, I would recommend something containing henna like a shampoo or herbal hair oil containing it. The henna must be one that dyes the hair black. One product that contains henna is Mira Hair Oil. It’s expensive, but it gives much volume to the hair. It seemingly makes it less light. Moreover, it makes it quite shiny and healthy. My hair is not black with it now. Nevertheless, perhaps, it will make yours black. Otherwise, you may try another product with the special henna for dying hair black and making it voluminous and healthy.

  19. Rafia says:

Hi, I have a problem of hair thinning. The length of my hair is fine but the hair is thinning. Can you tell me how frequent should i apply castor oil?

    • Jenny says:

Hi Rafia, at least twice weekly, but preferably three or four times per week for several weeks to see if you notice any improvement.

  20. rupinderkaur says:

Hi….my husband’s hair has lost from middle and from front sides is it possible to get the hair back with caster hair oil?????

  21. cyrus says:

Hi,I’m 14 years old, male can I use this castor oil to stop my receding hair line. Sorry for my english I’m filipino

    • Jenny says:

Hi Cyrus, although receding hair is common in older men, teen boys can also experience it. The first step is to find out if you have any underlying health problem that is causing it. Many times the common reason for receding hairline is due to hormones and genetics. In these cases there are various home remedies that encourage circulation and hair growth and castor oil is one of them. Other home remedies include onion juice and rosemary or even apple cider vinegar (ACV). I don’t know what gives the best results and probably it’s a matter of trying and seeing what works best for you, as there is no single solution that fits all. Results usually take time and it’s not a quick fix. Try it for several weeks and see if you notice any improvement.

  22. Krista says:

Hi, I would like to know where exactly to get castor oil and which brand to get? Also could I mixed the oil with olive oil hair strengther (melted) and apply every two weeks as well as washing my hair?

    • Jenny says:

You can get it in drugstores, some supermarkets and online (like Amazon). Brands can vary in each country and I prefer not to recommend any product as I’m not associated with any brand or product and not familiar with all of the brands. You can mix it with olive oil in a half and half ratio.

  23. Reenu says:

how we can use castor oil on my face.

  24. Lee says:

Can I use Castro oil on my eye lashes

  25. Tina says:

can I use castor oil to base my scalp on a daily basis, or do I need to wash it off?

    • Jenny says:

You can use it on a daily basis although if you find it too much, you can do it for 3-4 times a week. After applying the oil, wrap your hair in a warm towel or a shower cap and leave it for two to eight hours. You can also leave it over night to give the oil enough time to penetrate the follicles and hydrate your scalp and hair thoroughly. Then wash your hair as usual using shampoo and conditioner. Make sure you rinse all the oil out of your hair.

      • uloma says:

must i rinse the castor oil away from my hair and also must i mixed it with other oils before i used it on my hair and how long will i use it before i will see the result on my hair

        • Jenny says:

If you don’t rinse the castor oil it will leave your scalp and hair very greasy and it doesn’t look good. You don’t have to mix it with other oils if you don’t want to. The mixing is because castor oil is very thick, but it’s up to you. Results will take time. It’s not a quick fix and patience is require. Allow at least two month (preferably more) to see if there is any improvement to the hair growth. You can mix castor oil with coconut oil and/or a few drops of peppermint or rosemary essential oils which where found to encourage hair growth as well. See more information in my article on How To Make Your Hair Grow Faster: The Best Natural Ways.

  27. Shruti Das says:

Can you please tell me correct ##brand of castor oil## for curring baldness and regrowth?

    • Jenny says:

Brands can vary in each country and I prefer not to recommend any product as I’m not associated with any brand or product and not familiar with all of the brands.

  28. shreya says:

i have very less hair on my front head so one of my frnd suggest me to apply castord oil after appling some small small pimples comes out on my front heat what is this ?????

    • Jenny says:

I have read that pure castor oil can cause skin irritation for some people (I don’t know if you apply pure castor oil or if you mix it with other oil). If mixing with other oil doesn’t solve the problem, try another method like applying onion juice (see instructions here) or use rosemary (more information here).

  29. parmita says:

i have loss a huge amount of hair due to bad water supply .. if i use only dabur castor oil will it help me regain my hair n thicken it

  30. Christina M says:

I just got a bottle it has olive, almond & Castor oil. How much would I use?? I want to grow my hair out it hadn’t grown in like 4 years

    • Jenny says:

It depends on the length of your hair. The oil needs to cover the scalp (as you massage the scalp to increase circulation) as well as the hair itself (as you use it as a mask too). For shorter hair start with about 2 tablespoons. For longer hair increase the amount. After 1 or 2 experiments you will know the right quantity for you.

  31. parmi says:

Hi…i am 20 years old and my hair has lost from front sides of head.and becoming bald from front side. is it possible to get the hair back means regrow of hair.

    • Jenny says:

I guess you will need to experiment and see if you notice any improvement. Some applications work better for some people while not for others.

  33. sriti says:

I am just 17 yrs old girl I’m going bald from middle of my head also I loose hair from only 1 side of my head my hair have become very thin will castor oil help to cover that bald spot? ??

    • Jenny says:

I think it would be wise to try and find the reason for the hair loss (see my articles about Causes of Hair Loss). It’s a good idea to find the root of the problem rather than just treating the symptom. Your doctor will be able to find if there is any specific reason for that hair loss. Parallel to tackling this issue you can try castor oil or rosemary (see more information here) or onion juice (more information here). It’s hard to know what method will work best as everyone is different and it takes time to notice results.

  34. Saru says:

Hi, I have been using castor oil from a month.I hair loss is more even after applying oil but I noticed a small regrowth of hair in front side.i apply oil and leave it for 3 to 4 days and wash on 5 th day.is it good to do like that.reply must

    • Jenny says:

I believe you’ve lost hair during massaging the scalp. I don’t believe you’ve lost the hair because of applying the oil. You also leave the oil for too long on your scalp, and it may affect the results as well. There is no need to leave it for 3-4 days. Leave it for several hours or overnight and then wash your hair as usual.

  35. Ahmed says:

Hello I am suffering from hair loss I am facing this problem from past 4 yrs but now my hair is almost gone I feel disappointment how to regrowth hair on the bald patches. Please Help me, waiting for reply

    • Jenny says:

Hi Ahmed, there are several natural ways that may help improve hair growth. One of them is castor oil, and the others are rosemary and onion juice. It’s hard to know what will work best, as each person is different and time is required before noticing any improvement. Not all methods work for all people and sometimes it’s a matter of experiencing and see what works for you.

  36. Ahmed says:

Hello can I mix castor oil with minoxidal for Best results plz Help me I have more hair loss

    • Jenny says:

I’m really not sure Ahmed. Probably it’s best to stick to one treatment rather than mixing two, but I don’t know for sure.

  37. rapidly facing the problem of hair fall, any solution is there to resolve it

    • Jenny says:

Beside the method of castor oil, you can try other methods – rosemary (more information here) and onion juice (see here). It’s hard to know what works best, as every person is different so it’s a matter of experimenting. It takes quite a while until you see results. It’s not a quick fix.

  38. Gloria from jos says:

Pls tell me, is castor oil liquid in nature or thick and how do one know the real oil

    • Jenny says:

Castor oil has a liquid thick consistency and this is why it is mixed with other oils for an easier application. You can buy castor oil is drug stores. Read the label and see that it isn’t mixed with other ingredients.

  39. Yogesh says:

Can i use these treatments alternatively? Like Monday – castor oil, Wednesday – Onion juice, Thursday – Rosemary, Saturday – Olive & Almond.
    Thank You…

    • Jenny says:

I guess you can do that if you want.

      • Vinod says:

I’ve been applying castor oil for 3 weeks. I lose 50 to 100 hairs every time when i apply.

        • Jenny says:

Hi Vinod. You are not the first person who complains about it and you can see my replies to other people. I believe you’ve lost hair during massaging the scalp. I don’t believe you’ve lost the hair because of applying the oil. Too much massaging, unlike gentle massage, may cause hair loss. Massaging the scalp should boost up the blood circulation and aid hair growth. I can only believe that the hair you lost was about to fall out anyway soon. 41. Rajan says:

May I use regrow Ayurvedic oil to control hair fall????

  42. parmita says:

hi jenny i have been using the mixture of these 3 oil from 1 month but i didnt get any result why its so ……. plz hlp me i am in a serious problm of hair loss … it looks odd to be like that as a girl plz hlp me …… :'(

    • Jenny says:

Hi Parmita, it takes longer to notice results, at least two months. Also not every application works for everyone. Each person is different and results vary between different people. There is no 100% guarantee for success. You also need to look at the underlying cause of your hair loss – is it stress? nutritional deficiencies? or something else? (have a look at my article about 10 reasons for hair loss). You also need to treat the problem from the root and not only the symptom itself.

  43. venkatesh says:

    Hey jenny…
I m 16 yr old boy and i m experiencing hairfall thinning and brown hairs… will this help or i will lose more hairs with its use?

    • Jenny says:

Some people find that applying castor oil causes them to lose more hair. And indeed, too much massaging of your scalp (unlike gentle massage) may definitely cause hair loss. Massaging the scalp should boost up the blood circulation and aid therefore hair growth. I believe that the hair they lost was about to fall out anyway soon, as we also lose normally about 100 strands everyday, sometimes less, sometimes more. Follow the oil application with a gentle massage for at least two months (preferably more) to see if you notice any improvement. There is no 100% guarantee that it will work in your case as results vary between different people, and there is no solution that fits all. Also it worth finding out the reason for your hair loss – is it stress? nutritional deficiencies? hormonal issue? or something else. Thus you can treat the underlying problem and not just the symptom itself.

  44. teddy says:

is that effective for hair falling? Can i make it castor oil at home from castor bean?

    • Jenny says:

Hi Teddy, there is no solution that fits all and there is no 100% guarantee for success as results vary between different people. I don’t know anything about making your own castor oil but I’ve read that the beans are poisonous until they are processed to remove the toxin, so if I were you I would buy it in a drug store.

  45. Mercy says:

    Hi Jenny,

Do we have to wash off the oil from our hair?
I mixed the castor oil with Shea butter and apply it as my hair cream and never wash it off. Is that OK for hair growth?

    • Jenny says:

Hi Mercy, when you apply the oil, you apply it also on the scalp and not just on the hair. When putting a product directly on the scalp, it’s a good idea to stick to something light. Thicker greases like shea butter and castor oil will contribute to buildup on the scalp and to greasy and heavy appearance of the hair. This is why it is recommended to rinse it of.

  46. Temitope says:

Hi… My name is temitope I have bad front edge hair from my childhood ,will this oil help restore my hair nd make it grow

    • Jenny says:

I don’t know Temitope. I don’t know what initially caused the hair loss in childhood and I’m not sure if castor oil can help in your case.

  47. mai says:

    Good Day!

Is APOLLO Castor oil is safe to use in hair? the label says : Apollo Castor Oil ( Cathartic/Purgative) Kindly advice.

    Thank you!

  48. Jason says:

I have had my hair falling out for quite a when and was noticeably thinning badly, I’ve only been using it for about 10 days, and I could already notice a lot of long baby hairs oming up and there already turning brown, and what I do is massage the castor oil/coconut oil mixture in for at least a couple of minutes, and and then I wash it out I. The morning and massage it in for a while as I’m driving to work, and then once in a while while I’m at work, and of course we driving home, and I’m massaging it lightly

  49. bre says:

Can I mix this oil some other oils I have with a lil bit of water? I want to put them into a spray bottle and spray my scalp maybe every two days for scalp moisture and for itch. Im just wondering if adding them to water will be okay. also I am getting marley twist which is my reason for wanting to add water in a spray bottle so that it can easily be applied to my scalp and not my actual twist.

    • Jenny says:

You can add some sort of natural emulsifier to form a stable mixture and to keep the water and oil together, but if not – shake vigorously before each application to create (an unstable) emulsion. In this case the oil and water will not create homogeneous mixture so you will need to shake it well before each application.

  50. Taz says:

Hello Jenny! If I use Castor oil after shaving my head will it work properly? I’m losing my hair from front side of my head gradually. So I decided to shave my head and use this natural oil.

    • Jenny says:

You can still apply the castor oil mixture on the scalp itself with circular motions. This gentle massage increases the blood circulation, and helps to rejuvenates and stimulates hair growth. There is no 100% guarantee of success so I don’t know how effective it is in your case, but it worth trying. Give enough time to see results as it’s not a quick fix and many people don’t have the patience to wait.

  51. k2 says:

  54. Rana says:

Hi Jenny, what kind of shampoo and conditioner should be used after massage of Castor oil, as my hair is very thin , using a strong shampoo and conditioner results in more hair loss

    • Jenny says:

Hi Rana, there are various products that are designed especially for thin/damaged hair but they are usually quite expensive. You can simply use baby shampoo/conditioner which is considered to be mild and gentle and usually costs less.

  55. Nafis says:

  59. Muddz says:

Jeeny mam last question…..should I go for…castor oil treatment or onion juice treatment or both….
for effective results plz suggest me….asap…mam plz

    • Jenny says:

It’s hard to know what will work best for you as every person is different. You can try and alternate between the two if you want (for example, one day onion juice and the next day castor oil and so on).

  60. Muddz says:

nafis brother plz tell me…Is this method useful for you? and how much time you are using this castor oil treatment? plz help me bhai

  61. KAY says:

I love castor oil I mostly use it on my eyebrows and eyelashes which have grown noticiable thicker in the last few weeks. I’ve just started to use it on my hair I look forward to seeing how that goes.

  62. Pavan says:

Hi man..how to do massage of scalp? do you have any video for regain hair?

    • Jenny says:

Spread your fingers, and then place your fingertips on the scalp. Avoid using fingernails to prevent damage to the scalp. Keeping finger tips on the scalp at all times, spread your fingers and move them around the scalp, covering all areas. Use slow, gentle movements in a circular motion around different areas of the scalp. Massage the scalp thoroughly for at least three minutes or longer if preferred and make it a regular routine.

  63. Harish says:

Which castor oil brand is good

    • Jenny says:

Brands vary between different countries, but you need to make sure it mentions on the product label that it is cold pressed.

  64. rachell says:

How many times do you have to put it on to grow your hair?

  65. monish says:

ma’am can you please explain me the massaging procedure. for how long should i massage my hair after applying oil

    • Jenny says:

As my reply to the reader Pavan, you need to spread your fingers, and then place your fingertips on the scalp.

  66. tariq wani says:

Hello mam . I hv been using hair straightning many times . Now I experience a huge hair fall . Cn I use only castor oil witout mixing it with other oils .. and in weak how many times should I use it

    • Jenny says:

The reason that castor oil is mixed with other oils is that it’s a very thick oil so the mixing helps to improve its consistency. Also there are some references that claim that coconut oil is also good for hair growth hence many mix both of them, but it’s really up to you. As for your second question – see in the article under the headline “How Often Should you Use Castor Oil?”.

      • tariq says:

One more question mam .. is it necesaary to use shower cap or towel after masaging with castor oil.

        • Jenny says:

The warm towel helps the oil penetrate the scalp (like when using hot oil treatments for hair), but it also works to prevent stains on clothing if the hair is long and comes with a close contact with your clothes (or if used over night, with the pillow), but again – it’s not necessary and if you have a short hair that doesn’t touch your clothes you don’t have to use it.

  67. Antonio says:

For someone like me who is black and can’t wash their hair much at all (maybe once a week at absolute most) is it okay to use as a leave in daily hair conditioner? My plan was to use castor and rosemary with jojoba and coconut oil and just apply to my scalp and leave in. Has anyone tried this?

  68. Nelly says:

Hi I need help,I lost my hair due to the glue that they used at the salon what can I use to re-grow my hair from my bald scalp??

    • Jenny says:

You can try the method of castor oil or any of the other methods mentioned at the end of the article. And of course don’t use the glue anymore.

  69. Nelly says:

someone recommended Dr Miracle do you have any idea about that?

  70. Abegail Jadap says:

Hi I would like to know if the castor oil (cathartic/purgative) type would help me for the growth of my hair. It is because it’s the only available type of castor oil in the drugstore. Thanks!

    • Jenny says:

Cathartic/purgative means that it serves as a laxative, and indeed one of characters of castor oil is that components in the oil affect both the small and large intestines. What’s importance for you is that the castor oil is cold pressed, and the product label should mention it.

  71. sanjay says:

Does we use castor oil without mixing the other oil.for quick treatment of hair grow

    • Jenny says:

The reason you mix other oils with castor oil is that castor oil is has a very thick consistency, so mixing it with other oils makes the mask easier to distribute throughout your hair. But it’s up to you.

  72. Alyssa D. says:

Hi! Is there any vitamins you recommend that help with hair regrowth that can be taken simultaneously with the above oils?

  73. Nisha Sutar says:

Hi, I am Nisha here, my problem is that my hair is not growing since 1 year is castor oil help to grow my hair .. i like long hair

    reply must

    • Jenny says:

Hi Nisha, there are several methods to encourage hair growth. Castor oil is one of them along with other methods listed at the end of the article. As in any application, there is no 100% guarantee for success, and results vary between different people. It’s hard to know which methods works best for a certain person and often it’s a matter of experimenting and giving enough time to see results (often several month) so patience is required. Also in some cases there is a limit to how long your hair can grow, and it is different for every person. I’ve read that it depends on how long your hair follicle stays in the growing stage. Some people have hair that can grow three feet long, while some people’s hair follicles go into a resting stage earlier than that.

  74. MOHAMMED says:

MADAM … I LOST MY HAIR FROM MIDDLE AND I NEED YOUR HELP TO REGROW

    WAITING FOR YOUR DETAILED REPLY

    • Jenny says:

Hi Mohammed, try to find if there are triggers that cause you the hair loss, such as extreme stress, nutritional deficiencies, heredity etc (see more about it in my article about 10 causes of hair loss). After targeting the root of the problem, you can try to treat the symptom itself of hair loss. You can try the method mentioned in the article, or any other method listed at the end of the article with the relevant links for more information. It’s hard to know which methods works best for a certain person and often it’s a matter of experimenting and giving enough time to see results (often several month) so patience is required.

  76. Lelisa says:

Hello Jenny, I lost my hair from the front head and middle. can I use castor oil mixing with egg and honey? pls help me.
    Thanks

    • Jenny says:

I’ve seen some references about using oil and egg for hair mask to rebuild damaged hair – you can see more information about it here.

  77. Suraj John says:

will the application of castor oil help in regrowing the hair that i have lost or will it only prevent hair loss.

  78. Mars says:

I started using castor oil (mixed with grape seed oil and lavender oil) approximately 8 months ago and my hair is noticeably thicker, longer, and stronger. In the first few months I used it every week and then I went to every 1-2 weeks (I got lazy). I would leave it on for at least one hour and massaged my scalp for a few minutes before washing it out. I now have less hair fall out, my individual hair strands are thicker and stronger, my overall hair density has also increased (my pony tail feels like a thick paint brush), and I think my hair grows faster than before.

I also stopped highlighting my hair and went back to my natural black hair over a year ago. It was really damaged and over processed. I minimized heat on my hair and got several trims every 3 months to get rid of my very dry split ends. It took a long time, but now my hair is so healthy and thick. It hasn’t been this healthy since I was a kid with virgin hair. That’s over a decade ago!

  79. S says:

My hair is thick and very long and the ends were becoming dry, so after each shampoo, I began applying just a smigde of organic castor oil to the very ends of hair while it was wet and left it in.

My ends seemed to instantly come to life and are now as healthy, soft and shiny as the rest of my hair.

It’s also the only thing I use to moisturize my skin now from head to toe – and also to remove makeup.

Although the thickness of castor oil can take a bit of getting used to, it DOES actually soak into the skin (eventually), leaving it dewy, glowing and soft.

  80. Archana says:

    Hi,

I have a big forehead. Can castor oil and olive oil help to grow hair on forehead??? If so how many hours should I leave them on my head and how many times a week?? Am scared to leave the oil on head overnight bcoz I may get cold.

  81. amu says:

    Hi,
I just want to know can I use this oil directly on my scalp without mix any oil,n also not any issue if using the hot oil

    • Jenny says:

You don’t have to mix it. The reason you mix it is because castor oil is very thick. You don’t have to warm the oil, you can wrap your hair in a warm towel, or just apply the oil as is at a room temperature.

  82. Archu says:

Hi Jenny, I m 33 yrs lady living Michigan since 1 year, I’m loosing hair front side,I got stimulant laxative castor oil in drug store
,it’s purpose is stimulant laxative, can I use this for my hairfall

    • Jenny says:

Castor oil is traditionally used as a medicine to reverse constipation, but the oil’s benefits can be also used topically to treat variety of skin conditions as well as hair loss.

  83. Archu says:

Thank you very much Jenny for quick reply.

  84. popedhhud says:

Can I use Jamaican black castor oil

  85. Subhra says:

For thin hairs how many days required to give castor oil to get thick hair??

    • Jenny says:

I’m not entirely sure. Everyone is different and results and time frames vary between different people. Usually you need to give time to these application. It’s not a matter of days and patience is required.

  86. ravi says:

Applying Castor oil daily night and leaving it over night and once in a week applying onion juice makes hair regrow faster ????

    • Jenny says:

I don’t know. Everyone is different and results vary between different people. Usually it take time to notice results and patience is required. It’s not a quick solution. Some people will find it helpful while others will not benefit from it. There are no rules or solutions that apply for everyone.

Hi Jenny, i am using castor oil daily night and wash it in morniong with sampoo..plz tell me can i take any other oil again afer taking my bath???

  88. Ashley says:

I have damaged hair due to hot tools and over processing. A year ago I started using products recommended by my hair stylist and my hair was much healthier. I wanted to help my hair grow and also help with the damage so I have used a castor oil/coconut oil treatment twice and just a coconut oil treatment once. My hair seems to feel more like straw and doesn’t feel as soft and healthy as it did before the treatments. Am I doing something wrong or is there a reason the treatments made my hair feel and look worse?

    • Jenny says:

I’m not really sure Ashley. The way our hair looks like is affected by many parameters such as nutrition, weather, hair applications, genetics, age and more, and it’s hard to know what causes your hair to look the way it is. I would not imagine that the oil treatment caused it and I don’t believe you did anything wrong. Sometimes not every treatment works for everybody, or perhaps the cause lies somewhere else, it’s hard to know for sure.

I am a black girl and I a very short hair and a very dry hair so what can I do for to have a very long hair within one Month and I have a big forhead, so what can I do for to have hair on my forhead, can I mix castor oil with olve oil and rud it on my forhead, will it help but do not sent a massage to my Email box otherwise I will not able to read it because my phone is set in germany, so if you are sending a message jut sent it to my message box and this is my number 7531832 or 3195977 please reply me today as soon as you can.

    • Jenny says:

I don’t see how you will be able to get a long hair within one month. You need to be realistic and patient as it takes time for the hair to grow, and one month is not enough time. You can mix castor oil with olive or coconut oil and apply on the forehead, or use the other methods that are mentioned at the end of the article. It’s hard to know how it will work in your case as everyone is different, and results vary between different people. Some people find it helpful while others not. It also takes time to see improvement and it’s not a quick fix.

  90. Inira says:

I went to the salon to get a haircut they cut really short. I want to grow it back out really fast. How many times a week should I apply it to my hair? Is tea tree oil good for hair growth too?

  92. affan says:

hi jenny, due i have less hair in the front side and day by day my forehead is becoming big, kinldy suggest abt how to use castor oil in order to regrow hairs again. plz also suggest any other oil for growing hairs quickely

    • Jenny says:

Hi Affan, there is not a quick solution for hair growth and patience is required. It usually take several months to see improvement. Also there is no solution that fits all. Some people may notice improvement while others not. You have all the details of how to use castor oil in the article. Coconut oil is also good for hair growth so you can mix the two. You can add to the mix a few drops of rosemary and/or peppermint essential oils which are also known to improve hair growth.

  93. Deepika jain says:

Hi,I have lost my hairs day by day.growth of my hairs is very slow even scalp is in front of my head. I apply onion juice+ coconut oil for last 3-4 months. But I can’t found any result.plz suggest sumthing.

    • Jenny says:

Hi Deepika, I believe the first step should be identifying the reason behind your hair loss. There can be many reasons for hair loss, and I’ve written about it in my article 10 Causes of Hair Loss. Once you identify the root of the problem and take measurements regarding it, you can treat the symptom itself of the hair loss. There are many methods to encourage hair growth which I’ve mentioned in my article on How To Make Your Hair Grow Faster: The Best Natural Ways. It’s hard to know which method will work best for tou as every person is different, and results vary between different people. Some people will notice improvement, while others will not. You can try other methods or combine several of them, but there is no guarantee for success. It might be that you need a consultation from a health practitioner who can dig further into things and help you with a treatment plan.

  94. Aroona says:

    Hi there
I want a suggestion from you
I was suffering a severe hair fall from the last 3 or 4 months because of dieting
My hair stylist recommend me to use castor oil with coconut oil or either with mustard oil. I am using it from the last 1 month i have seen improvements though the length of my hair is pretty good after using it and somehow also controls hair fall but i found after applying oil i am loosing more hair during shower and after shower then the normal i am using loreal elvive repairing shampoo kindly suggest me about that should i continue it or not?

    • Jenny says:

I’m not sure, but I suspect that your hair loss while shampooing is probably due to massaging the scalp while applying the shampoo and/or combing or brushing the hair afterwards. Too much massaging (unlike gentle massage) and frequent brushing may definitely cause hair loss. Massaging the scalp gently is generally good because it should boost up the blood circulation and aid therefore the hair growth. I can only think that the hair you lost was about to fall out anyway soon. We also lose normally about 100 strands everyday, sometimes less, sometimes more. Perhaps try to reduce the frequency of shampooing your hair, for example if currently you apply the oil daily and shampoo it daily, maybe try to apply the oil and wash your hair only every other day or only twice a week.

      • Aroona says:

I already wash my hair twice or thrice a week should i continue using castor oil with coconut oil ? As far as everyday strands are concerned i think as per day i can only lose 5 0r 10 strands also tell me that should i use castor oil lemon flavor? Very first time when i start using castor oil i dont know its a lemon flavor but my hair were very smooth shinny and healthy and even i didnt lose hair during combing please specify that lemon flavor castor oil(Marhaba castor oil ) is good for hair or not
        I didnt eat rice yet

        • Jenny says:

I’m personally not familiar with this brand of castor oil. Any castor oil which is cold pressed is fine for this purpose. Again, I don’t believe the castor oil and coconut oil caused the problem. If you see no improvement in the long term, try something else.

  95. arun says:

How I know castor oil cold presed or not?

  98. yogeshwar singh says:

    Hi, jenny.

i had lost half of my hair at crown.
bt before one month, i determined to take all hair back.
    i follow some rule,
    1. Yoga in morning and evening.
    2. Onion oil in morning and evening.
    3. While sleeping, massage with a bit warm coconut oil.

while i m taking enough ptotien from food, fish oil, multivitamin.

and now i m seeing that, i hv my head full of hair(because i hv saved my hair for treating scalp well), ,

**problem is, my neww hair are comparisionally, weak and very thin, they also hv low speed of growing dn others one.

@@@so what u will suggest me?

do i use castor oil With coconut for fixing my issue

    • Jenny Hills says:

Hi Yogeshwar, a few comments: 1) From what I understand, you only started one month ago, which is still a very short time to get results. Even with commercial applications you need to wait a few months before assessing the progress. It is not a quick solution, and you need patience. I would be very surprised if only after one month you would have had a thick mane. The fact that there is some progress, even small one, after one month is quite encouraging, I think. 2) Not every solution works for everyone. People are different and get different results. It may work for someone whereas it won’t work for someone else, so there is no guarantee for success. 3) You can mix several methods for hair growth (see all of them in my article on How To Make Your Hair Grow Faster: The Best Natural Ways). For example you can mix coconut oil and castor oil and add a few drops of peppermint or rosemary essential oils which also encourage hair growth. Give it more time and then assess the results.

  99. RAJU says:

Naturally how many hairs can fall in a day..?
    Will they regrow..???

    • Jenny Hills says:

Every person is different, and there are times when you lose more hair, for example after giving birth, stress, etc. We can lose normally about 100 strands everyday, sometimes less, sometimes more. Normally this is a temporary loss and the hair will grow back, although there are cases where the loss might be permanent.

  100. yogeshwar singh says:

Sorry bt i hv 2 ask one more qu jenny,

tell me any way 2 strrong my new hair and also how to thicken it as my all healthy haairs.

    please jenny

    • Jenny Hills says:

I don’t know as to what extent you can further make your hair stronger and thicker other than trying one or some of the methods to encourage hair growth. It might be that the new hair will not be as thick or strong as your normal hair. The best thing you can do is to eat healthy food (see my article about The Best Foods And Nutrients for Healthy, Strong and Shiny Hair), try some of the methods to encourage hair grows, and see if there are any other underlying reasons for your hair loss (such as extreme, stress, nutritional deficiency etc. If it’s genetic that you can’t do much about it). You need to tackle the issue from different angles. There is not an easy and quick solution (otherwise hair loss wouldn’t have been so common). It might also be that the results would be disappointing, and you need to be prepared for that too. Some people find that only hair transplant works for them while others learn to accept themselves the way they are. You have a lot more to offer than your hair only.

  102. Shiv Shanker Janagama says:

Hi, this is shiv(26 years old)
Past 18 months i am working under AC, and noticed hair loss due to dryness.
Will my hair regrow , if i use the oil mentioned above.

    Please reply me

    • Jenny Hills says:

Are you sure that this is the reason for your hair loss? there can be many reasons for hair loss (you can find some of them here). The first step is to identify what causing the hair loss and tackle this issue. The second step is to encourage hair growth, and this can be made using several methods that are summarized in my article on How To Make Your Hair Grow Faster: The Best Natural Ways (and castor oil is one of them). There is no guarantee that any of the methods will work, as results vary between different people. It also takes quite a while until you see results, so it’s not a quick fix so patience is required.

I am a 24 yr men, affected by mens pattern baldness…. Please do suggest can i use those remedies and i am using onion juice as well.

  104. John says:

Hi madam, can i apply the castor oil mixed with coconut oil on my hair without heating the same

    • Jenny Hills says:

Coconut oil is solid below 24 degrees Celsius. If you live in a warmer climate where the coconut oil has melted, then you don’t need to heat it.

  105. Mumtaz says:

Hi Jenny. Can using two remedies together will harm the hair more. I mean can i use onion juice remedy and castor oil remedy on alternate days. Will that help.or we should continue with one remedy first and wait for the results and if it won’t work then proceed with other.

    • Jenny Hills says:

You can combine between several methods, for example: you can use different methods on alternate days, or you can add a few drops of rosemary or peppermint essential oil to the castor oil mix.

      • Mumtaz says:

        Thank u Jenny.
Dear My mother is above 55 years of age. Few years ago she lost all her hair totally bald. Don’t know the reason. We consulted dermatologist but no use she got hair on her face instead of head.will these home remedies help her to regrow hair.especially mentioned her age for that.

        • Jenny Hills says:

Hi Mumtaz, it is really important to try and find out what had caused the hair loss. There can be many reasons for it (and you can find some of them here), as this will help to tackle the root of the problem rather than treating the symptom only. The second step will be to try some of the methods to regrow hair faster (see more information here). I don’t know if any of the methods helps your mother and to what extent, as there is no guarantee for success. Best to try and give enough time to see if there is any improvement.

  106. perumal says:

which method is best – daily morning massage with castor oil (or) over night leave the castor oil and then wash off??? which one is best ???

    • Jenny Hills says:

You need to leave it for two to eight hours, or you can also leave it over night. This will give the oil enough time to penetrate the follicles. If you just massage it in the morning and then rinse it, the application will not have enough time to work. If you work during the day, then its best to apply it in the evening/night, but otherwise it doesn’t matter.

  107. ben says:

hello jenny, i hv been using castor oil for about a month because my hair became brown and began to get thin from the sides. my hair is now dark and shiny. i mix it with coconut oil and olive oil. i leave it overnight and wash it off with andrea oil for hair growth mixed with shampoo. i’hv seen some progress although slow but i see new baby hair growing from my thinning areas. i apply the mixture everyday. do you think am doing too much with the mixture and shampoo? i also take biotin. plz help

    • Jenny Hills says:

Hi Ben, the whole process is usually very slow and can take several months. Even with commercial applications it takes quite a long time, often 6 months or more. Some people get better results while for others the results might be disappointing. I’m even surprised that you saw some improvement after only a month. There are several methods to encourage hair growths (see them here) as well as supplements for hair growth – see here) and it’s hard to know what will work best for a specific person. Basically you can use these methods on a daily basis, although if you shampoo your scalp on a daily basis you need to use a mild and gentle shampoo, such as baby shampoo, and massage the scalp gently.

  108. Kessi says:

I use Quane Cosmetics Hair Happy it has castor oil in it, does well to moisturize my hair and help its’ growth.

  109. Cindy says:

Can I mix my castor oil with apple cider vinegar instead of olive oil, being that they both stimulate hair growth.

    • Jenny Hills says:

I believe you can, but you will need to mix it thoroughly before each application as the oil will separate from the ACV after a while.

  110. Maggie says:

Hi, I loss quite a lot of hair while applying castor oil, is that normal? Btw I use castor oil twice a week and leave it overnight. And I wash my hair everyday as my scalp gets oily easily. Is it something wrong with my procedure or?

    • Jenny Hills says:

I believe you’ve lost hair during massaging the scalp. I don’t believe you’ve lost the hair because of applying the castor oil. Follow the castor oil application with a gentle massage for a few weeks to see if you notice any improvement. If you don’t see any improvement, discontinue with the treatment. If you need to wash your hair on a daily basis, use a gentle shampoo such as baby shampoo.
