    Can I use coconut oil supplements? I tried taking it by the spoonful but its disgusting…to me. And as far as using it as a cooking oil the organic tends to leave the coconut oil taste. Which isn’t always ok.

      This is a good question. Most of the companies have softgels of 1000 mg (1 gram). As most people know, the recommended amount of coconut oil to eat each day by many researchers is up to 3 tablespoons. 1 tablespoon is 14 grams. So to get the equivalent amount of coconut oil that most people are consuming in capsule form, one would need to take about 42 capsules a day. The companies recommend anywhere from 3 to 6 capsules a day, which is only a few drops of coconut oil. However, I was able to find in Amazon softgels of 3000 mg (3 gram), and at the bottom line it’s still better to consume less than the recommended daily intake than not consuming it at all. Another thing is that the appropriate dose of coconut oil depends on several factors such as the user’s age, health, and several other conditions. Be sure to follow relevant directions on product labels and consult your pharmacist or physician or other healthcare professional before using.

        hi, do you know what is the daily dose (gram) of coconut oil for a four years old?

        I normally feed my daughter coconut oil after dinner, since it is not much energy use at night time, do you think it’s still appropriate to feed her at night time? tq.

          Hi Rachel, I was unable to find a recommended daily intake for kids. For adults it’s up to 3 tbsp. daily but couldn’t find a reliable source for kids. Perhaps ask your doctor on your next visit as well as the best time to feed it during the day as I’m not sure.

      This is in regards to what Laura was saying. There are two types of coconut oil….refined and unrefined and this makes a BIG difference when cooking or consuming it by itself. Refined coconut oil does not have a taste when cooking or frying foods, and unrefined has the coconutty taste that most people love. They put it into smoothies, and everything else they concoct.

      Coconut oil or olive oil are both used in hair treatments to make the hair soft, radiant and healthy. I don’t think applying coconut or olive oil on your daughter possesses any risks despite her young age, after all it’s something we consume internally.     Thanks for all the great info. I recently found a source for coconut oil in bulk at a very cheap price. I was confused by it though. Unlike the kind I have bought in the past, this looks and acts like crisco! It doesn’t melt sitting on the counter in a hot kitchen and feels like the consistency of crisco and is hard to clean off your hands like vaseline! It has no smell and is a creamy white color.

    Is this normal for refined coconut oil? Are there any health benefits to using this over refined sunflower oil or the like?

      It can last for a very long time. Usually expiration date is 18-24 months, but it will usually be fine much longer than that. It is recommend to store the oil out of direct sunlight.

      I’m not really familiar with the details of creating coconut oil, but from looking at webMD website, it is mentioned there that “cold pressed” coconut oil generally means that a mechanical method of pressing out the oil is used, but without the use of any outside heat source. The high pressure needed to press out the oil generates some heat naturally, but the temperature is controlled so that temperatures do not exceed 120 degrees Fahrenheit (49 degrees Celsius).

    Pliz help!Ive a dental problem&I need to know if Ive to get refined or unrefinined coconut oil.Its realy realy scarce in South but I need your encouragement to seek for it.If I start using it will it prevent me from losing my cracked teeth?

      In any case you need to seek your dentist advice to estimate your situation. Generally speaking, when using coconut oil, always choose the unrefined coconut oil.

    How can you tell if coconut oil is refined or unrefined if it is not stated on container? Also, I saw liquid coconut oil in store on same shelf as jars of the solid white type, is there a difference?

      Hi Jo, an unrefined coconut oil is sometimes labeled as “virgin” or “cold pressed virgin”, although many manufacturers also add “unrefined”. Almost all the coconut oils available in your grocery store or vitamin store are refined unless they specifically say otherwise on their label. I would try to find a brand that specifically mentions “unrefined”. As for your second question – I’m not sure I know the answer, but I’ve seen references of “liquid coconut oil” which stays liquid, even in your refrigerator.       Hi Kate, eating the raw fruit is not like eating its oil. I had a look at a nutritional chart that compares the nutritional value between raw coconut and coconut oil, and there are several differences:
      Raw coconut contains sodium, potassium, iron, magnesium, calcium, carbohydrates, fiber, protein and vitamin C whereas coconut oil doesn’t. Both contain fat, but coconut oil contains fat only.

    I have a drink I mix up with lemon juice, honey, cinnamon and apple cider vinegar. Could I just add a tablespoon of coconut oil without it being a problem or blocking absorption with the other ingredients?
