How Daily Teaspoon of Cumin Help You Lose 3 Times As Much Body Fat

Some of the most unassuming spices can be amazing sources of health. Not many would guess that the small and ordinary looking cumin seed (also called jeera) can become your faithful weight loss aide.

A study published in the journal Complimentary Therapies in Clinical Practice was the first to reveal the potential cumin seeds have for dieting. Using this spice can help you lose weight quicker and influence the body’s fat profile in a positive way by reducing the levels of harmful lipids in the blood.

Research on Cumin and Body Fat

Iranian scientists from the Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences included 88 women who were considered overweight or obese into their study. They randomly divided them into two groups.

  • One group ate 3 grams of cumin powder daily, mixed into 5 grams of yogurt.
  • The control group consumed yogurt too, but without any additions.
  • Both groups received dietary advice and reduced their daily caloric intake by 500 calories.

Study Results

Different body measurements and parameters were taken before the study and after 3 months of dieting.

  • Women who were eating cumin, lost 3 pounds (1.4 kilograms) more compared to those in the non-cumin group.
  • More impressively, the cumin group members decreased body fat percentage by 14.64%—almost triple the 4.91% loss posted by the control group—apparently due to the addition of the fat-burning spice.

The women in the treatment group also experienced reduced levels of fasting cholesterol, triglycerides (a type of fat associated with atherosclerosis, heart disease and diabetes) and LDL (bad) cholesterol, while their levels of HDL (good) cholesterol increased.

Furthermore, the ladies who took cumin had larger reductions in body mass index and waist circumference.

The authors of the study concluded that cumin powder can significantly boost the success of a weight reduction diet.

How does Cumin Work?

Cumin is rich in antioxidants and phytosterols. Phytosterols are natural substances of plant origin that are similar to cholesterol in their structure and function. They inhibit the absorption of harmful cholesterol in the digestive tract, which could be the explanation for their weight-reducing effect.

Previous clinical trials have shown that consumption of foods enriched with at least 0.8 grams of plant sterols or stanols lowers the levels of LDL cholesterol.

Cumin has also been associated with cancer prevention. The seeds are an excellent source of iron and support the function of the immune system.

How to Consume Cumin?

3 grams of cumin powder, the dose that was used in the study, comes to a little less than a teaspoon. If you find the mixture of yogurt and cumin slightly unappetizing, you can try other ways to incorporate the powerful spice into your diet:

1. Add ground cumin to roasted or sautéed veggies.

2. Use it when you make hummus or guacamole.

3. Make a cup of warming beverage by boiling cumin seeds in water and letting them steep for 10 minutes.

4. Sprinkle it over nuts or other healthy snacks.

5. Use it to spice your lentil soup.

6. Add it to plain brown rice to give it an exotic kick (you can also mix in dried apricots and almonds).

Other Spices for Weight Loss

          I have no idea what it can be (I’m not a doctor). If I were you, I would go for a second opinion from a good dermatologist to find out what it is.

          In the study the participants consumed 3 grams of cumin powder daily mixed into 5 grams of yogurt, and didn’t consume it as a tea, so I can’t really know. I haven’t used it personally for weight loss purposes because my weight is fine, but I like to use this spice anyway in cooking.

      It is mentioned in the study that the 88 women were put into 2 groups for 3 months either with or without the help of 3 g cumin powder with yogurt at two meals (so I understand from it that it was each time 1.5 g cumin + yogurt whereas the control group received the same amount of yogurt, but without cumin). However I’m not sure if it’s really important when you consume it. I guess you can be flexible and adapt it to what is suitable for you.

    I just came across your website and I’m so glad that I did! First, I’d just like to say thank you for taking the time to post all of the great information on the various health articles. Having wisdom for a healthy body is worth more than all of money than in this world! Too bad I didn’t realize this myself before having health issues, but that’s why I’m here now, to try to help myself to get healthier again. I’ve been learning about essential oils and herbs over the past couple years but there’s so much more that I want to learn, and am eager to learn!

    One question that I have about this particular article, but it’s regarding the form of cumin. What I mean is which form of cumin is most beneficial, oil or powder from the herb? I was taking cumin oil capsules for about 6 months but I didn’t see a very big decrease in the inflammation that I’ve been fighting! I’m desperate to get this inflammation down but I also have a sensitive tummy so I try to be cautious of what I’m taking so that I don’t get too much acid and end up with heartburn. Thank you for your time, and I would greatly appreciate your input on this subject.

    Is it just as effective to use cumin in a gel pill form? If so, how many per day or how many milligrams? If I eat too much of the powder it upsets my stomach.

      3 grams (3,000 mg) of cumin powder was the dose that was used in the study, which is a little less than a teaspoon. I’m not sure about taking cumin in other forms (don’t confuse it with black cumin supplement, it’s not the same). You can divide the amount of cumin along the day instead of consuming it at once. It may help to prevent upset stomach.

          Black cumin and cumin are NOT the same thing. Black cumin is Nigella sativa (often called black seed, which has many health benefits – see my article about it here). However in this article the research talks about cumin (Cuminum cyminum) – see my article about the health benefits of cumin here.

      In the study the cumin was not consumed as a tea, but according to the Ayurvedic medicine creating a detox tea made of cumin seeds, coriander seeds and fennel seeds tea is a favorite tool for fighting fat. The combination of ingredients helps to improve digestion and break down fat (read more about it here).

      I believe you can lightly roast the cumin seeds (dry roasting without oil) for a short period of time and it will still be ok, although I can’t really be sure as the study used unroasted cumin.

      Hi Sonia, people who suffer from under-active thyroid (hypothyroidism) often struggle to lose weight. I think you might benefits from reading the article by Mary Shomon who is thyroid disease expert and who explains the mechanism behind it. Although she doesn’t have a magic solution, it’s still worth reading – “Losing Weight with Hypothyroidism“. I don’t know if you take medication to treat the problem, but talk to your doctor (preferably endocrinologist) who can recommend a treatment plan for hypothyroidism.

      Losing 30 kgs takes time. You didn’t gain it in 2 months and you will not lose it in 2 months, although I would have expected that you will see some results after that time. The best combination to get the best result is to combine exercising (both cardio like aerobics as well as resistance like weights) and a proper healthy nutrition. I’m not sure what you mean by saying you didn’t do dieting, and what’s the level and frequency of your exercising, but cumin water alone will not do the job as it’s not a miracle solution. It’s an add-on to other measurements to help you reach your goal faster. Also every person loses weight at a different pace so there is no rule that applies all.

          Daily walking is great, but you need to monitor what you eat too. You don’t need to have a strict diet, but you need to stop binging and stop consuming unhealthy food. If you can combine resistance exercises in addition to the cardio work (walking) it will help you to tone the body and burn more fat, as muscle tissue burns more calories, even when you’re at rest, than body fat. The cumin is an add-on to the other measurement and you can incorporate it into your daily nutrition.

      Many people think that by taking only one measurement (cumin) they will miraculously lose weight. Unfortunately cumin is not a magic solution. It is one of the tools to help you to reach your goals faster, but if you neglect to be physically active or eat unhealthy food, the cumin will not solve the problem. You need to be realistic and honest with yourself and ask yourself what other actions you take to maintain a proper weight.

      I believe it’s because it takes time to see results, and by the time people see (or don’t see) results, they forget where they read it. I have another article about clearing a stuffy nose in 1 minute, and in this case you can see immediate results, so people left quite a lot of comments regarding their own experience.

      Hi Cindy, in this case we are talking about a little less than a teaspoon of cumin as per the study. I was unable to find scientific information to determine an appropriate range of doses for cumin, although WebMD website mentions that “Cumin is LIKELY SAFE when taken by mouth in food amounts and POSSIBLY SAFE when taken by mouth in appropriate medicinal amounts”. You can have a look here at possible side effects, as well as interactions with other medications. In any case, if you have any concern, please check with your doctor, as I’m not a doctor.

      Hi Meena, cumin is not a miracle solution and needs to be combined with other measurements to speed up the weight loss process. Are you physically active? do you eat a healthy nutrition? Also for some people it takes longer to lose weight. You didn’t gain the weight in one day and you are not going to lose it in one day. It is a process that requires more than just cumin. The cumin is just an add-on.
